With the back of my house facing west we get scorching afternoon sun through our back sliding door.

Kinja'd!!!

I had gotten some “FREE” fence poles from work, and with some turnbuckle and various hardware, and also 1/2” x 4” concrete anchors “from work” my father in law helped me install this Saturday.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

There was a hardware store run so of course we visited a local brewery on the way back.

Kinja'd!!!

The poles are 10’8” and the sun shade is sit at 9.5’ and 7.5’ slope away from the house. And when completed the afternoon sun was blazing onto the patio later in the day where I felt like I did all this for nothing. But Sunday early afternoon the kids laid out on the patio in the shade provided and it was worthwhile.

It’s stull a bit odd to see a canopy looking out the back door, and the dog gets tangled up with her lead.

All in all to quote a fellow respected Oppo, “Job Done.” It’s not quite what I envisioned, but it is done. I have been thinking about doing something for over a year.

Cheers!

Nice. Seems like with the hard work of putting up the poles you can now  adjust the angle of the shade or rig up something at the right angle to block the sun during whatever time you want.

Oh wow. That’s something I’ve never seen. I dig it  I’m sure you can adjust the angle to dial in the shade too.

I’ve mentioned to my wife: “Do we tell the kids not to throw the cat or dachshund out the window  or let them figure it out, and THEN tell them it’s not ok?”

Why add a garage when you don’t really use the dining room?

Here is what I got:

Patio Paradise 10' x 15' Light Grey Sun Shade Sail

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B06XC3XYPW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_dVk7CbK45EJ7E

Under $50 for 10 x15 next bigger size was 12x20 for about the same, or custom sizes in between  for $160+.

My patio pad is 12x22 which I needed to leave some room for the turnbuckle to expand and tighten. Also see grilling space on right

The concave edges are a disadvantage but a necessary evil. When drilling for the anchors we got through and into the gravel at about 3”.

If I did it again I’d use the 12x20 and stretch it over a horizontal bar on the Edge of the patio. But for now it’s done. I’d rather a patio 12’ out the runs the 36’ width of the house but that last 14’ will require some serious retaining wall.

I also need a fence, but at under $200 (I think) this came first.

This will take some time to (sun)dial in to  get it right where I want it. Like higher closer to the house, as a 1 foot strip of sun still blazes in at eye level at certain times when seated at the table. It’s a start...
