Interestingly when I was a child in the 1970's and 1980's we always refer to the DC-10 as the plane that crashed and were much more enamored with Boeing offerings like the tri jet 727.

That flight also had a camera in the cockpit and was showing the view out the front during takeoff

The first time I visited Chicago, back in 2006, my friend took me out to that location where AA191 crashed. We worked for the same airline ground handling company so we were both interested in anything commercial aviation related. Kinda eerie...

I do remember exactly where I was that day...
However the color shot in your spread is not AA191. That is a Delta L1011 that went down a DFW in a wind shear event. There were not many big pieces left of AA191.

I’ve never seen those bw photos before. Chilling. This gets a short write up in tomorrow’s TDIAH.

Funny I was thinking that picture didn’t belong.
Edit - I believe the DELTA flight was also 191. Flight 191 in general seems to be a bad luck number.

That second event was of the tail section of DL 191 which encountered a microburst at DFW in landing.

I liked the 727. I also like the KC-10 Extender:

I remember that being reported.

I wondered about that and yes, that does look more like an L-1011. That’s what I get for using the Internet. :(

I had a L-1011 pic in the mix. Edited.

Yes. I have deleted the picture, with apologies.

No apologies needed. It’s an interesting coincidence that the AA and DL events were both flight 191.

DC-10 did have sort of a rough start, with the cargo door failures early in its life, this one, and several other fatal accidents.

Survivable storage has gotten so cheap it seems like all airliners probably should have cameras in the cockpit and looking down the aisle(s) as part of their black box set up. It wouldn’t be that expensive. Instead we still have planes flying around that can’t even record audio for the entire flight.

The wheels of change move slowly in aviation.

Both three-engined wide bodies, too.
