Kinja'd!!!

It got me thinking.

Are there more statues of Queen Victoria around the world that of anyone else. Just curious, but genuinely curious.

((EDIT: not including religions icons such as jesus, etc... because well, Her Majesty did actually exist))

Scotland 10,

England 63 ,

Northern Ireland 4,

Wales 4,

Europe

France 1,

Gibraltar 1,

Jersey 1,

Malta 1,

Canada 10,

Victoria, British Columbia

Kinja'd!!!

Caribbean

Bahamas 1,

Belize 1,

Guyana 1,

Jamaica 1,

Oceana

Australia 10,

Ballarat, Victoria, Australia

Kinja'd!!!

New Zealand 4,

Wellington, New Zealand.

Kinja'd!!!

Asia

Hong Kong 1,

India 7,

Malaysia 1,

Sri Lanka 1,

Thailand 2,

Yemen 1,

Africa

Egypt 1,

Kenya 1,

Mauritius 1,

South Africa 7.

That’s 136 official statues of Queen Victoria.

That’s a lot. Maybe a little surprised there isn’t an official statue in some of the other Commonwealth of Nations countries.

I think she’s likely greatly outdone by various religious figures.

Probably more statues of Jesus. But otherwise, I’d bet Vickie’s got the most.

Lol.

Okay, is Her Majesty the most common statue of a real person who does or did exist.

Like I said to facw, is Her Majesty the most common statue of a person who does or did exist.

I think the general consensus is that Jesus was a real person (though the question of his divinity is a different issue). And most Saints are historically verifiable as real people.

I’m skeptical of the whole thing.

Hell of a lot of statues of Her Maj and she wasn’t particularly striking. Still, the sun used to never set on that empire....

Most depictions were of Her Majesty in later life.

Few are of Her Majesty in earlier life.

The most recent installation was in 2 007 in Victoria Square, Westminster, London.

Lol. W hen people say (mockingly or otherwise) (not saying your mocking at all) , ‘the sun never sets on the British empire’, but that saying was used much earlier, in the 16th century, some 300 years prior under King Philip II of Spain’ s reign. It’s merely a shall we say, propaganda term used at the time.

I mean, take the poster , ‘Keep calm and carry on’. One of the most internationally recognised posters. That poster was never actually used. It was meant for if and when nazi Germany did succeed and invade Great Britain. The idea that the people to go about their daily life as normal as possible, while certain members of parliament, military and the public who were on a list most lik ely to aid the nazi Germans would be taken out by an underground militia.

I'm a bit disappointed that none of them look like Dame Judy Dench....

I actually did know some of that history re: the keep calm posters, but I just like to mix in things I’ve seen referenced in pop culture from time to time.

Considering how she was practically the grandmother of half of Europe’s inbred rednecks  royal families, I'm surprised there aren't more

Cool.

There is a lot of cool history out there.

The sun never sets thing gets thrown about a lot in memes, often to mock Brits or British history.

I think because most of those want to acknowledge their own royal family, than that of another nation first .

I mean some here bang on about the royal family being German, though that wasn’t since the 1700s and if some residents can be classed as part of their new country, I think 300+ years is sufficient for the royal family to no longer be classed as German. With King George I becoming King of the United Kingdom in 1714. Granted there was Ernest Augustus’s wife Sophia of the Palatinate (who was Dutch) but also grand daughter of the King James I of England and Ireland , also being King James VI of Scotland (the numbering only being settled by Prime Minister Churchill much later in history).

I am surprised there aren’t more in Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu, Cyprus, Tinidad, Tobago, St. Kitts, Nevis, etc...

I suppose that is true. I never really considered it that way, being an Anglophile, and I tend to stay away from places that really abuse meme posting.

Nah, mostly they think it’s mocking us, but doesn’t. Gets a bit boring really.

I would bet that there are more than 136 statues of Washington, Martin Luther King, Lincoln or some other American.

One per state at least? MLK may have one on every major city?

No idea...just reckon

In Canada, we primarily honour her by drinking beer for three days in may, and continuing to spell honour with the ‘u’.

Also, the city I live in is named after her, our 2 main streets are named Victoria and Albert,  although for some reason it’s pronounced Reej-eye-nah.  No one knows why.

Regina, sometimes ‘rex’ on coins, etc... merely means Q ueen and Crown. Often used as a Christian name but also used as a surname. Her Majesty II, signs her name Elizabeth R.

In the U.K. You’ll see post boxes with VR or EIIR on them, Victoria Regina and Elizabeth II Regina.

By way of St. Thomas, Ontario, obviously. Victoria was the first Queen of Canada, after all.

There’s quite a few of Washington.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_memorials_to_George_Washington#Pennsylvania

We name a lot of things after Dr. King (streets, schools, parks, government buildings, etc), but haven’t constructed all that many statues.
