I sat in the new Arteon at the dealer. Definitely a ton of legroom, even with the front seat set for my 34 inch inseam. BUT, limited headroom in the rear, which should not be a surprise. I was fine, but I have a short torso.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The B pillar ends up in the same spot for me as in my GTI, right next to my head. Trunk opening is sufficiently large, but the roofline still limits cargo. Worth it, though, as it’s nice and low, and doesn’t seem too large on the outside. Interior is very nice, with dash layout similar to my GTI with sufficient improvements to reflect the passage of time.

Kinja'd!!!

I like the frameless windows.

Kinja'd!!!

Overall, worth considering if I wanted a cheap A7, although I suspect that the Stinger GT would get my attention better, but I really wouldn’t want to autocross either, I suspect. Not sure that it should have an “R” on it.

Kinja'd!!!

Still, finally something to look at when getting some service done at the dealer. [Edit: Bonus doggo, even better than a car to distract me! 8 pound terrier mix, 5 years old. Total sweetie. ]

Nice! I got to see my first one this morning too when getting an oil change. It wasn’t PDI’d so couldn’t sit in it. I think I like the overall design a little more than the Stinger, but yeah they’re both more cruisers if anything.

Gotta love that $1700 bullshit sticker your dealer tacks on, ugh.

My cousin just bought this exact one in black. It looks pretty nice, I haven’t drove or rode in it yet thought.  I haven’t had the heart to ask her what her monthly payments are.

I sat in one at the auto show 2 years ago, and was impressed with the rear legroom too - as well as the car overall.

My recollection is that the Stinger had maybe less headroom in the rear, but I’m biased because I banged my head on the roof getting into the back of the Stinger, which irritated me - and is pretty common with these 4 door “ coupes”. The Mercedes CLS is just as bad.

The Stinger is better.

Yeah, they wouldn’t have made a sale to me if they tried any BS like that, which they did not on the GTI. I’m even arguing over whether they should change my wipe r blades, got it down to 3 bucks over ordering from amazon, and don't have to do it myself.

LOL. Confirmation bias. A t least the St inger can be had with a ridiculous power engine.

Which is unfortunate! These 4-door fastbacks with frameless windows are a great segment. Closest thing the US gets to wagons!

I think the saving grace of the Stinger is that it is still the only car in the segment that is rear wheel drive.

The A7 is either FWD or AWD. But yeah, I’m putting it in another box.

I’m very meh on this car. Of course, I’m very meh on VW in general. But you can have a Mazda 6 2.5T with way more torque for way less money given similar equipment, or an Acura TLX V6 SH-AWD at equivalent price/equipment levels , or spend a few grand more on a Kia Stiner GT and its TT V6.

Sure it’s cheaper than the A5 Sportback or 4 GC but those are true luxury brands which VW is not.

It looks good in person, but I agree that I’m not convinced that it is worth the money. If I drove people in the backseat more often I likely would shop this and the Stinger due to the hatchbacks, and probably would end up with an SUV, dog help me.

Then I’d need another car for fun driving.

I’m not crazy about frameless windows having had them on my beetle for a couple of years. In winter they get frozen. And there are more sensors involved to keep the window dropping as needed. Also; they make roof rack options more limited.

Subaru Impreza WRX STi spec C Type RA-R = 32 symbols

Arteon 2.0T SEL Premium R-line 4MOTION = 33 symbols

Even though I left out some ssymbols out from the model name we have a new contender for the title for the longest possible model name.

Huh, good to know. My reference point is my 1993 Integra, which never had problems with the windows, and I lived in Pittsburgh while I owned that. Well, it was a while ago, maybe they froze occasionally.

As I have said before it will 100% follow the CC. Not a bad car but not really exciting. A German Buick for the lack of a better term. People will forget about it as soon as it discontinued

All modern Audis (aside from the R8) have been on front wheel drive based platforms, with most higher-spec models using quattro all wheel drive.

There’s even been front wheel drive A8 base models in the past.

It’s a fairly stylish car, and being short, I can’t be cramped in one , but I’ll just buy a 1:18 Chinese dealer model of one.

The Arteon sort of makes sense in VW’s lineup given that the Passat only has 174 hp and a couple trim levels. Whereas the other family sedans all offer a step-up engine, the Arteon is a step-up body style. Only problem is it’s a lot more expensive than the higher-powered versions of Accord, Camry, 6, etc.

I was thinking the Accord was a liftback based on appearance. Still, better style IMO, performance and reliability.

Easy to do - t he A7 is on a longitudinal platform, so if you pop the hood you see the engine sitting the same way as in an RWD vehicle. But it actually sits ahead of the front wheels so that the front half shafts can stick right out the sides without the additional driveshaft and differential on RWD-based platforms that are adapted to AWD like the Stinger . It is the same layout as modern Subarus. It is also  part of the reason for VW using a W12 instead of a V12.

I’ll argue that this isn’t true anymore. Up until 2016 or so yes, but now the only Audis on a true FWD-based platform are the A3 and Q3 . The rest (ignoring the electrics and R8) are on the MLB platform that is, in my opinion, a true AWD platform. They have a longitudinal engine sitting in front of the transmission with the front axles in line with the flywheel. This is the exact same layout Subaru uses in everything (save the BRZ) and I don’t really  hear anyone arguing that they use an FWD platform.  You can get an A4, A6, or A7 with FWD, but I’d say these are essentially AWD cars with the rear drive hardware removed - just like the FWD Imprezas Subaru sells in some markets outside of the US.

Especially easy because I never seriously shopped the A7, so didn’t really think about the drivetrain, although I really should have assumed AWD, so I don’t know why I was thinking RWD.

Trunk opening is sufficiently large, but the roofline still limits cargo.

The boot opening is massive compared to saloons.

Here’s the (non North American) VW Passat.

The Interior is like any VW/Skoda product really.

The dash especially.
