Wow, I had not heard anything about this. If true, it’s truly sad. What an icon of a plane. Watching him take  off under JATO is life changing.

Godspeed, Fat Albert. A couple of shots I took at a show back in 2014 at Fort Worth JRB.

It’s 100% true, that video is from the Blue Angels’ official Facebook page. I honestly enjoyed watching Fat Albert more than the Angels themselves.

I was fortunate enough to see one of the last JATO demos at Wings Over Houston. They haven’t done them in quite some time. Must have been quite a ride inside the a/c.

Yep, went from here to there  to verify. I agree too, my dad was a navy com man who spent his days in a c130, so I'm always drawn to them.

I saw it last around 2014ish at spirit airport in stl. Have some video and pictures of that one that I need to find and look at.

Supposedly, they’re looking at buying a newer used C130J from the RAF as a replacement (since, I would assum e, every piece of British military hardware, active or not, is always unofficially for sale).

This airframe dated to 1992, 27 years doesn’t seem like that advanced of an age for a C-130, but I guess they have a metric as to when they should be phased out before heavier maintenance costs and increased downtime  start kicking in.

JATO take offs are the best.

aren’t they getting another “used” one from the UK or Poland or something?

This current airframe, BUNO 164763, has been with the team since 2002, and was the last C-130 to conduct a jet-assisted take-off (JATO).

. . . . .

The Navy posted a notice on the federal government’s contracting website in March 2018 stating that a single-source contract would be executed between the Naval Air Systems Command and the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense for the purchase of a British Royal Air Force C-130 J.

I hadn’t seen that until ttyymmnn posted an excerpt above, but the UK apparently.

Why is the Navy buying a second-hand RAF Super Her c? The USMC already flies the upgraded KC-130J , why not use one of them?

Availability? Price? Otherwise, I have no idea. But you make a good point. FA is a USMC deal, flown by USMC pilots.
