So there are 23 Democrats vy ing for the chance to run against President Trump in 2020. This strikes me as patently ridiculous. But how much of the winnowing process will be controlled entirely by the media? Probably always been, probably will always be, 100% . But still...

I think the more important question is how much of the winnowing process will be controlled by the DNC. Remember, it was the DNC that forced Hillary down our throats. And we all know how that worked out....

Things should settle the fuck down after the primaries. This is exactly what they are for.
Of course, I’ve been wrong before. But only because I believed that people could actually think for themselves, and I no longer make that assumption.

It’s important that Democrats understand that. DNC -- and the Democratic Party -- are viewed as deeply corrupt and the Hillary debacle set that perception in concrete.

Ironically, the two things I discuss in person but not in writing is math and religion. Primarily because the only thing that makes people madder than when I talk about religion is when I talk about math.
I like to look them in the eye while I see the hope die in their eyes.
Don’t take that the wrong way, I don’t share my position unless directly asked to do so, so I’m not on some kind of crusade. I’m also not an atheist, I just look like one on TV.

careful, IME when people say “think for themselves” they usually mean “agree with me.”

My thing is, we can disagree about something strongly, we can want and like different things, but can we at least be intellectually honest?

It means defend their point with sources that are legitimately citable . It means follow logical rigor. It means fucking stick to the goddamn point without logical fallacies! It means checking and validating not just what you read and consume but what you say and how you express it.
It means fucking being analytical and KNOWING WHAT THAT MEANS.

Almost all of the winnowing process is handled by DNC party elites. Do you not r emember the last cycle when we were reminded that they’re the least democratic of the major parties? There’s nothing democratic about them at all, they’re totalitarians at their core.

Intellectual honesty is the one true bankruptcy that pervades America.
No, history doesn’t support that it was any better in the past.

That won’t change the outcome. Nobody has even tried to change the rules that give them all the power.

I’d never thought about it this way before, but I’ve had it pointed out to me recently that in California, under our Open Primary system, we can have general elections with two Democrats running against each other. Somehow, that just doesn’t seem right.

It would probably have to be in the evening, though.

It should, but it might settle down in bad ways. Picture a debate Bernie Sanders chastising Donald Trump for not passing higher tariffs .

I agree, there are way too many people running! And most of them are too old, tool polarizing, have too much baggage, and/or duplicate other candidates.
And more people keep jumping in! I wish I could say to them, NO NO NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Fucking clueless pieces of shit entering a race that’s already too crowded!
They need to narrow it down to Andrew Yang, Kamala Harris, and John Delaney. Yang is the progressive; Harris is the minority candidate; and Delaney is the moderate, and also the first one to enter the race.
Booker duplicates Harris and is not as good, anyway.
Bernie is too old and has run his course. Warren/Focahontas also has too much baggage and duplicates Sanders.
Biden is too old and has too much baggage. Biden Rule,Anita Hill, and more!
Beto has assault and DUI arrests, and he’s a furry.
Buttgig? Really? Trump will make fun of him to no end! He really should’ve taken his husband’s last name, instead of the other way around. His husband’s maiden name is Glezman. Pete Glezman is more electable than Pete Buttgig.
On the republican
side, I hope Bill Weld can do well. He is awesome! I really hope the 2020 general ends up being Weld against Delaney

I would suggest adding Pete as the gay candidate, since we’re identity- labeling people. Pete could also be Biden’s VP. I think that the Dems risk trotting out someone too progressive. I think the Lefties will vote D no matter who it is because not Trump. So the nominee doesn’t have to be uber progressive.

I agree the risk of someone too progressive is sometihng they can’t afford right now! And that goes double for a VP running mate! Both Hillary and Trump chose safe choices (Pence and Kaine), and I don’t think a gay candidate qualifies as a safe choice.
Delaney is by far the most-electable against
Trump!

The system is broken. We need more than 1 round of primaries and the voting needs to be done on the same day in every state. I never get a choice in Pennsylvania even though it is a swing state in the general election.

I’m not sure I agree about Pete not being a safe VP choice; someone more traditional like Biden could check several identity boxes with a guy like Pete. Still, not safe with whom?

And Republicans in California feel disenfranchised as well, both on the state and the national level.

I’m not sure what the eyeroll is about here, but I can’t imagine Progressives staying in bed on Election Day when they can vote against Donald Trump. I could be wrong about that, but that’s my guess.

People don’t put much thought into it. They park in front of their televisions and drink up whatever is presented to them. Trump gets that and he’s a master.

I think Americans and people on this page are delusional I that there is no legal basis for a primary. It is a party construct to have an American Idol runoff to build momentum.

with just enough of the type of people that voted for Trump. Dems can’t afford to risk it with this one. It’s sad, even after seeing how he is in office, I still think there are enough ignorant people in this country to re-elect him...I hate that.

I find it equal parts funny and horrifying how little people understand of the process. The DNC is a private organization , the RNC is a private organization , as such they can do as they please. It wasn’t really till the last 35 years that primaries expanded nation wide. It was always state officers the picked the delegates.

I think conservatives wear out the word delusional about as severely as Liberals wear out the word bigot .
They won’t stay at home because they hate Donald Trump too much.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 20:23 |

i use delusional, because according to 2 of them Trump, Biden, and Harris are all one in the same, and are looking for some mythical purity candidate that doesn’t exist.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 20:30 |
|
I don’t doubt any of that. It’s just that word gets overused and is greatly weakened as a result. People aren’t willing to put any thought into anything; they just believe whatever they think, probably
everything
they think, and they belly up to the trough of cable blather so they don’t have to think about what they think. What about you? Are you happy with the president and would like to see him reelected? (You don’t have to answer that here if you don’t want to. I’m just curious. Personally, I can’t stand the guy, but I am trying not to be irrational about it.)
![]() 05/23/2019 at 21:52 |

It is true it gets overused. If you want your policies enacted the first thing you need is to get elected. and to do so the best bet is to have a candidate with the gretest appeal to the greatest number of people. David Frum had a bit on how the trump team looked at 2012 and thought getting only 48% of the vote is only a problem if the opposite side is united. I do not want trump reelected and I fear a sizeable progressive wing sitting at home ro voting for jill stein

I wasn’t trying to social justice warrior on you with that word choice thing. I just hate it when liberals call everyone a bigot and I also hate hearing “Liberals are delusional,” which isn’t exactly what you said, but I’m really weary of how uncivil the political situation in our country has become.
I thought it was hilarious how Nancy Pelosi got Trump’s goat in the last 24 hours. But she needs to be careful: wrestle with a pig and you’ll both get muddy, but the pig will enjoy it.

i didn’t take it that way. I disagree with most of reagans policies, but his quote “No, if I can get 70 or 80 percent of what it is I’m trying to get, yes I’ll take that and then continue to try to get the rest in the future.” really is effective.
I think what the democrats need to do is change the game. Mcconnell has shown he’s 100% in the bag, so any impeachmet will die in the senate . No matter what he’ll cry hes the vic tim
