What is Your Ideal Car?
- - -
(afternoon share)
.
Mine would be a track-worthy midsize wagon, RWD or AWD, 6-speed manual, no more than 3500 lbs, naturally aspirated V8, a hydraulic steering rack, in a rich blue color. I’m 41, married, with 3 kids and 3 dogs.
.
Yeah, I pretty much want a reliable V8 RS4 Avant with a manual that’s not so nose-heavy...

Yep, so you also want a Holden Commodore/Chevy SS wagon like I do. Nice.

Boy, do I have a deal for you.

One car? I can’t pick just one car! I’d like a fast wagon for daily duty. I’d like a truck with a bed cap and racks for outdoor/weekend/offroad duty. I’d like a track car. I’d like a motorcycle.
There are just too many choices to be stuck with just one.

Velocity Blue 2019 F-150, Crew Cab, 6.5' bed, 5.0, 10 speed, 3.73 E-locker, 4x4, XL trim with the STX and FX4 package, center council, column shift, option in the carpets. Done. I actually configured this out the other day and might actually pull the trigger in a few months once the student loans are done. With a few assumptions (discounts similar to other trucks on the lot, qualifying for 0% financing) payments on this would actually be less than what I’m paying on student loans.
If I didn’t have to haul a kid around, 2nd gen Lightning.
Edit: and not that I really hate the stock rims, but swap out the factory 20's for a nice set (not bro-wheels) of 18's, a beefy set of all terrains , and maybe a leveling kit.

My car with an RX8 swap that spits flames every time you shift. Thats also reliable, lol. Bonus extra 80hp too.

An Audi RS5 Sportback would do. Only changes I would like to see would be the addition of a manual transmission, maybe some more steering feel, and ventilated seats just because I love those. Sonoma green of course.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 09:35 |

either: Stick AWD wagon, either V8 or TT 6.
OR: for hauling bikes; 69 or 70 elcamino. on air bags. a diesel power train (a 275HP I6 from a BMW sounds nice) stick, with the interior from an audi or a merc.

No you, want an E91 M3, which doesn’t exist. Just need to add some lightnes s to get to 3500 lbs.

![]() 05/23/2019 at 09:49 |

Personally, I would like a 2+2 shooting brake, RWD, with either a naturally aspirated straight six or a V8. Should have a large glass area, tires with actual sidewalls, and simple horizontal lines with a minimum of creases and folds. Also, functional metal bumpers and a focus on long life durability and ease of repair in materials and construction.

I’ve been looking at those V8 S4 wagons for way too long. At least they are coming down in price.

Haha! Do the LS swap first.

Oh, I agree, but this is a fun exercise.
I do love the idea of “one car to do it all”.

that’s the single turbo version and it’s very understressed. a plug and play tune brings it from 265 nm rear wheel torque to 439 nm with just 2lbs additional boost. the twin turbo factory version does 650 nm.

Turbo Caravan.

Truck with cap and racks, check.
Track car, check.
Motorcycle in the back, check.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:11 |

With a little more work that could be quite sexy.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:16 |

Yet still a minivan. :D
I have nothing against minivans, but my wife would throw a fit if I parked one in our driveway.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:19 |
|
Let me guess, she’d rather have a bloated, less useful, sliderless minivan instead, because “soccer mom” image of minivans ( which has clearly shifted to all the CUVs out there ).......
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:19 |

Kinja has been messing up for me too. But yea its nice having something you like, right?
Though 230hp and 2300lbs sounds real nice.

10:1 power to weight in a lightweight package is fantastic.
I’m at about 8:1, but at 1.6x the mass . =)
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:25 |

Ok, I’m just going to need about $150 million to get started.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:25 |

Yep. She refused to get a wagon. She briefly considered, then ruled out, a minivan. In the end, s he bought an Explorer.
She was not amused when I called it a really tall wagon.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:26 |

Honestly, since there Are rumors of avants coming back, I would even take the S4/A4 avant even with loving manual. Preferably S4, I think it’s the perfect balance of practicality, performance and comfort.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:26 |
|
Doesn’t want a minivan, goes and gets a sliderless minivan......
I still can’t wrap my head around this, it’s like buying a hammer to drive screws IMO.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:28 |
|
650nm sounds real nice. But yea, I guess at 430 it’ll run forever.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:30 |

Would be awesome to see Audi get manuals back, but seems unlikely. You’d think they’d see the business case with their RS line with the demand Porsche is seeing...
S4 Avant would be sweet. Where are you seeing these rumors?
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:30 |
|
To be fair, it does have twice the ground clearance as an Odyssey. Of course, our Outback has even more ground clearance than the Explorer. :) It’s AWD too!

Check’s in the mail.

Is that truck from the spintires video game series? I play Mudrunner all the time. It’s addicting and relaxing at the same time.

More rumors around the next gen a6 only right now, it makes sense as the only others that were really here are the e class, v90 and Xf. I do wonder if the v60 does well enough that they bring it back. Some say the B9 is too fAr into the life cycle to come here. If not, I guess I’ll hace to go with a modded allroad. A APR tuned B9 with S4 suspension and sq5 brakes wouldn’t be so bad. Honestly I’m just going to keep saving until something comes. The st will be paid off soon and I’m just gonna pocket the cash afterwards.
As far as manuals go, I think they’ve given up on them for good, just like MB.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:34 |

I’m 34, married, one child, one large dog (boxer), and one giant dog (English Mastiff). I don’t think I could pick just one, particularly if we’re limited to brand new cars. If I’m adding a DD to what I’ve already got. I’d go STi or Golf R.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:38 |

Right!
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:38 |

Unfortunately, the American auto market is very good at TREATING the midlife crisis, not PREVENTING it.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:43 |
|
At least one sliding door, enough room to lay a mat tress or a minibike, RWD, stick, enough power to spin the wheels, and an engine that produces a decent sound.
Either:
Tran sit with the 3.5 Ecoboost; manual swap
or:
Aerostar with the manual, but swap in the Yamaha tuned V6 in the first two gen SHO’s
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:45 |

Im a modest man, dont need much power ... just flames.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 10:59 |

I don’t know that it exists. I think my ideal car is:
Manual, small, easy to drive in traffic, 4 seats, roof rack, quick when called upon, reasonably fuel efficient; coupe preferred(maybe hatch) , advanced awd, 5 inches of ground clearance
I suspect a 2013 to present Audi S5 with sport differential gets closest . It’s a little big for what I prefer.
My 996 while awesome is a beast in traffic and too low to be usable all the way through a MN winter. And the fuel efficiency is pretty abysmal.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:10 |

My Stinger; but with a hybrid drivetrain.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:21 |

2006 Porsche Boxster 987 with a 6- speed manual transmission and 19 in. Sport Wheels. It is my daily driver but s ometimes I sneak into the garage and just sit in it.

I believe you’ve described a Golf R. =)
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:30 |

An E39 wagon with a manual trans, and a ALH TDI engine swapped in for fuel Economy, and a heavy duty rear suspension for hauling/towing.
Basically a not so big RWD, Manual, wagon, with a nice interior, that gets 45mpg or better, that can haul a small boat or utility trailer. It would probably be easier to get a AWD, manual, Passat wagon and just TDI swap it tho.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:32 |
|
I like it!
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:33 |

Basically a clown shoe that’s built like an old Volvo, with an LS1?
I can dig it.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:34 |

Yeeeesssss.
I’d be very happy with a RWD 335i wagon. That would hit the weight mark.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:35 |

Sort of an 1800ES-meets-Scimitar GTE-meets-BMW would be ideal.

Love that Aston Martin is pairing a manual with the AMG engine in the new Vantage. Will be watching the depreciation on those - ha!

No idea, It’s a Tatra 8x8, I want one.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:41 |

I’m sure I’d be very happy with a Golf R (or even a GTI).
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:44 |

The Odyssey is insanely low, even for a minivan. Modern minivans have gotten too low IMO, then again, I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve actually needed more ground clearance, and I regularly use my van off road.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:44 |
|
Yes...
But make mine a Cayman S (once the kids are driving themselves).
Love those wheels.

![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:49 |

This is also acceptable
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:54 |
|
You are not wrong. I guess I should add; subjective appeal. The Golf R looks fine but the S5 to me is a good looking car . I’d also need to see how I feel about the R’s awd system. Whereas everything I’ve heard about S5 with the sport diff is exactly what I’m looking for.
![]() 05/23/2019 at 11:58 |

Very large, very powerful, very luxurious , and graceful while still being just a bit imposing. All the better if it can handle a corner or a bit of weather.
