i’ve been having an issue with my rear brakes. They are hydraulic discs. I replaced the pads last summer. It seems each time I go out I have a little less stopping power. the brake lever does not go all the way down but I’m squeezing pretty damn hard and still can;t get them to lock up. So here is what I think in order of likelihood and you can offer your opinion, cuz thats what the internet if for right?

1. Hydraulic Fluid: maybe its just old, maybe it has air, I dunno. Its never been changed. It says it is mineral oil. I was thinking of changing the fluid (however the F you do that). I have mineral oil for the butcherblock counter I made. Is mineral oil the same as mineral oil or are thier differnces? Do i need to buy new mineral oil just so it has a bike on the label insted of a cutting board?

2. Pads: the pads were junk and have morn out only after one year of riding (the previous onrs lasted like 5 years.

3. Dicsc: they seem fine but are also original. I dont know why these would be the problem

4. operator error.  screw you guys.  i know how to pull a handle.

My first thought was air in the lines, but it could also be pad contamination. Maybe there’s a tiny leak around the piston that’s getting oil into the pads?

Definitely do a brake bleed. Sounds like they’re shimanos. You can buy a kit, supposedly it’s pretty easy.

I wear out pads fast too. I wore out my resin pads in about 8 months, so I upgraded my  rotors so I could run Metallics, so far so good.

no idea mate.... but ive had the same issue with mine.. gradually lost brake strength.. new pads did nothing

friday itll be going in to the shop to get the brakes bled (and some new pads) well see if that does the trick

(ive been largely ignoring not having a rear brake... but me fronts gone too now... im not feeling entirely as safe as i like to be in traffic now)

the brakes make a hellova lot of noise instead of slowing me down tho... its kinda fun startling people

if i have to buy a kit would it possibly be cheaper to just bring it somewhere?

I would start with a new set of pads and a really good cleaning. You might also do a fluid flush and replacement , but it’s my understanding that many of these are a pain to bleed.

there are a couple turns on the trail i ride where it helps to be able to lock up and slide around the corner and it has become nearly impossible to do i t.

I forgot to answer the “cheaper” question. It’s all about the required tools and how much you value your time.

the first kit I looked at was $60.  Every other kit is $25 so I’m going to go with the kit and see how that works.

on second thought, i have mineral oil at home.  I saw on line that you can use baby oil. which is mineral oil, so i’m thinking its all the same shit.

What are you doing for chain lube?

Are you just blasting spray lube all over the goddam place and getting it on the rotor?

I’ve done this and it is detrimental to rear brake performance.

If the lever is firm, bleeding not likely the issue. Most likely contaminated pads and glazed rotors.

Find the service manual for that particular brakeset to identify the correct process for cleaning the rotors. Get some new pads. You will likely need to bed in the rotors. The service manual will recommend a process for that as well.

no, it comes in a squirt bottle.  i usually drip it along the chain and a little on the gears.  you do bring up a good point tho.  i wonder if i am getting so spraying off the gears when i first set out.  I still think the level is traveling more than it was.  i ordered the kit for the fluid flush.  I’ll hit the pads/rotrs with brake cleaner before I put it all together

i already o rdered the kit for the fluid flush. I’m thinking even if its not the issue its about time to be done. W ould the rotors look any different if they were glazed? Nermal got me thinking that I could possibly have chain lube spraying on the rotor because I just squirt in on instead of rubbing it in. I’ll definitely hit the pads/rotors with brake cleaner before I put it all together.
