Kinja'd!!!

I thought I'd just go ahead and reseal the old gearbox and... well... n ot just one, but BOTH of the eyes were broken off of this snap ring. Ain't no way in hell that sonofabitch is coming out of there. I've already marred things up pretty well trying, so it may be time to accept defeat.

Ugh, sounds annoying.

What’s a snap ring?

Soooooooo annoying...

Here’s a snap ring:

Kinja'd!!!

It’s supposed to have those little eyes on the ends so you can grab it and squeeze it with a pair of snap ring pliers:

Oh dang, that is very tantalizing. Right there, but out of grasp.

Any chance you could solder something to it?

Like pip boy might be fishing at, get something under the tip and pry it out and up against the bore before the clip groove. might need to push something against the other end of it to avoid the clip just spinning when you’re trying to jam something behind it.

Circlips are the WORST. Especially it you don’t have a set of circlip pliers.

Two Harbor Freight picks? Hold one end with one pick, and pry up with the other.

This seems like the only way to get the clip out without further damage.  If one end can be pried out then it should go, but the trick will be to keep the other end stationary.  Yikes.

I tried... Even with fawnceh snap-on picks. I tried and tried and tried. That sucker refuses to come out.

I spent about an hour and a half attempting this last night... It absolutely refuses to even think about coming out.

1/8th  drill bit to make a small hole on the meaty side, then try and pry it inward and slip a flathead under?

Spring steel is a pain. Cobalt bits are King!

You can pick up singles cheap on eE ay for $4-5 shipped.

Hold one end with a small blob of hot glue, then use a right angle pick to pry the other side inward. Use a precision slotted screwdriver to pry upwards until you can grab it with a pair of pliers.

Sorry for the late reply. Reading some of the other comments here, I’m not sure that everyone understands that the clip is in a groove and cannot simply be pried up and out. Frankly, I’m just as stumped as you are.

Unless... if you could somehow cut it in the middle of the C... But with what? A sawzall? Anyway, you won’t be able to cut it in two pieces, but maybe if you can just weaken the middle enough to grab one of the ends with a small pick, it will bend and come out of that groove ?

How about using a small dremmel cuttoff wheel and slicing it down in the center, parallel to the ring. It’s 1 1/2 inch diameter so y ou may have to wear one down to fit and also y ou will need to stop the ring from spinning somehow and also you will need to put a rag in the hole to prevent chips from getting into the box but I would think it would work.

You may butcher part of the slot but the remaining 80% should hold the ring fine. I wouldn’t worry about the ring’s hardness, we cut a padlock off a trailer and it sliced it like butter.
