Went Black Last Night

Decided to get something done last night, so I enlisted the kids to help.

They got it all masked while I worked on the new hatch:

With the jamb done, it could go on:

With the new hatch on I set to checking out the kids’ mask job. They did a great job, so I set into wiping down, then laid sealer, then set into painting. It was almost dark by the time I got done, but I got it sprayed and pulled tape:

Took a few more pics this morning before I left for work:

Now that can dry til this weekend, then I’ll scuff it back out, mask it off, and get the Shadow Grey laid on. Once that’s on, I’ll pull tape, and clear the whole thing.

What did you do about the insides of the doors and such, what’s the plan there, paintjob-wise?

I think the plan is that it's a 30 year old minivan and it's not worth THAT much effort

Honestly, I’m not going to worry about it. If it was a high dollar restore, sure, but it’s my family truckster, no one will even notice.

Once the little overspray gets in there, they will blend right in.

You get really good results.  Do you have a large compressor or are you using a turbine system?

HVLP gun and an old Sears compressor like this:

The compressor is a little small for major painting, it runs pretty much non-stop, which leads to moisture in larger jobs, so I usually just do minor stuff with my setup.

When I do major painting I usually do it at my Grandpa’s place, he has a much larger compressor that keeps up better.

This was the first repaint, which was done exactly the same way:

That was fresh after spraying, no wet- sanding/buffing. Hoping to get away without needing to sand/buff again this time.

We have one on the large compressor. My little one only has issues when it’s humid out and I usually don’t do major painting with it, so I’ve never worried about it.
