BEHOLD:

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Damn right it runs Crysis.

R eally though, this is my first gaming PC build that helped carry me through most of college in the bustling metropolis of Rolla, MO. It was as sembled in 2005 and used up through 2010 with the following parts :

AMD X2 4400+ (2.2 GHz) w/ 120mm Zalman Al+Cu cooler

DFI LanParty nF4 SLI-DR motherboard

2 x 1GB OCZ Platnium DDR400 RAM

EVGA GeForce 7900 GTX 512MB (was originally a BFG 6800 GT )

Antec Performance II SOHO File Server Case w/ 4 x 80mm Panasonic Panaflo fans attached to a Zalman fan speed controller

Antec 550W TruePower 2.0 PSU

3 x 400GB HDDs (1 SATA, 2 PATA)

16X DVD +/- R burner

3.5" floppy disc drive (aww yeah)

It had been sitting in the corner of my computer room since I built its successor in 2010, but I decided to power it on last night, partially out of curiosity, partially to make sure I backed up some of the stuff that was on it. Remarkably, it only needed some BIOS adjustments (after losing settings to CMOS power dissipation ) to get going and then all was well. No magic smoke, no alarming sounds, and temperatures were all still healthy. Funny enough, those Crysis pictures aren’t just for show. T hat disc was actually sitting in the DVD drive all these years , so I started it up and the game ran great with Medium settings @ 1280 x 1024.

I think I’ll have to spend some time digging back through my extensive (like 3 columns of start menu extensive) game collection later . Maybe even track down a few more sticks of RAM and another video card to “complete” the build just for the hell of it. If nothing else, it’s a neat little time capsule.

that’s a good windows XP/late windows 9x gaming rig right there!

keep it. also give it a nice cleanup... that case is amazing! Hold onto it.

I’m nowhere near a PC guy, but I’ve never seen a CPU heatsink & fan shaped like that one

I’m sure it ran Crysis @ 1024*768 and medium settings at a whopping 20-30fps ;).

Sounds like a machine in my basement I would love to never see again.  Looks just like it to, same case.

Zalman made a few variations of this at the time, they were pretty quiet compared with other coolers of the era. I think this is the CNPS7000C

Thanks, and w ill definitely be holding on to it . I’ve run into a few too many games that don’t play nicely with Windows 10 that I’d love to try again at some point. The case is definitely a beast (probably weighing as much as that 19" CRT it sits next to) , though not the most friendly thing to work with if memory serves.

Close, it’s a CNPS7700-ALCU. I recall them also touting some cooling benefits to the nearby RAM and northbridge while they were still on the market .

I’ll have to double check the resolution, but you’re probably right. I think I still have FRAPS on this thing somewhere that I could use for a quick benchmark lol. Still good enough to be playable though.

They were pretty ubiquitous for a time.  I think I got mine on clearance near the end of their run since I wasn’t liking the trend towards more stylized cases with glass and numerous lights.

I had a similar build in ‘ 04. Same board. Ran bf2 overclocked. I have too many cases sitting around and some vid cards that win10 hates....or the makers never made drivers for 10 year old cards to work on win10. So i dunno what to do with 5850s or gtx 560s. Or a 4850 even.

I ran I ran the original crisis on a ThinkPad with a core 2 duo and N vs graphics card and it did about 20 frames per second. this desktop card is much faster. Id bet 40fps minimum
