In 1st place: actual chain oil. In last place: ATF - it stinks something fierce when the chain gets hot...

Why on earth would you use ATF
You used ATF didn’t you

By a bizarre coincidence, a lot of cars have exhausts close enough to the trans so that trans overheating or spills from filling will result in the exact smell you have experienced.

I think Diff fluid smells worse but might have actually worked better than trans fluid

Seems like ATF would have been WAY too thin. I hope you didn’t damage your saw. :(

Electric saws are an interesting choice. I’ve got one on a stick. I can take it off the stick and use it like a normal, albeit half sized, chainsaw.

I run four different chainsaws depending on the job, I buy Husqvarna bar oil by the gallon.

Nothing smells better than hot Maxima chain wax.

I doubt it would damage it but it probably all ran out in a quick minute.

My arborist buddy told me to use canola oil

For backyard jobs over the weekend in my densely-populated neighbourhood, it was the right choice. If it was a job big enough for a gas saw , I’d probably just have hired someone to do it for me during the week.

That would have been awful, too.

Oh, nothing I’m sure, except there was none within easy reach once I realized the chain was dry...

They are great if you don’t use a saw often. No messing with gas and futzing with it to get it started. Just plug it in and it works.
