I’ll post a full writeup tomorrow, but the short story is that I no longer feel nervous driving my Volvo around.

I’ve been tempting fate with this car for a while now

It’s one of the two shear-head bolts that were holding the steering lock in place.

The steering column thing locking up whilst driving struck me as deadly
Also a callback to the three times my last Tercel tried to kill me.

The lock actually failed open: I could turn the wheel freely (well, as freely as you can call turning without power steering) while the car was refusing to start.
I remember your predilection for crappy Tercels, but I don’t remember the murder attempts.

Thanks! It sure did take a while, but I got it in the end.

I can't find the post, but soon after the engine seized in full speed but THICC traffic on I-5 the day I bought my Paseo. And this is just the third Tercel. I seem to remember the brakes failing on my second...
