Needs more gold in the color scheme.

Vintage aviation just reminds me how much our collective risk profile has changed over the last century.

This one nose planted on its first takeoff run, killing both pilots, demonstrating a primitive MCAS system.

Yeah no, if Trump was serious about getting a new plane, it’d be this one:

Kinja'd!!!

Or maybe:

Or a profound lack of knowledge about COG.

Yuge! Seriously, though, don’t give him any ideas.

Eh,Trump aside, I kinda want to see the AU where NAA managed to get an SST into service, and it was accepted as Air Force One.

I think we might be seeing the return of SSTs in the not too distant future. Smaller ones, though. There’s been some serious research into mitigating sonic booms. The real deal breaker, though, is fuel economy. That much hasn’t changed since the Concorde days.

Ahead of its time, in a way.

Nose trim the hard way.

Yeah, turns out mitigating a sonic boom was easier than finding a way to create  them efficiently.

The drag probably canceled out all the lift.

Eh, Trump’s more like Musk that way: his timeline is “optimistic” and the budget is too low by half, but it does eventually get done.

Boom Supersonic is claiming that theirs will be quite efficient. IIRC, cost per passenger mile less than half of what the Concorde had. Apparently the big thing is being able to do the whole flight without afterburners, which of course saves a ton a fuel. And they are claiming it will have trans-P acific range, which both makes good use of that speed, and implies much better range than the Concorde.

Of course we’ll see if they pull it off, but they ( and the other small SST startups) are definitely confident that improvements to engines and aerodynamics will greatly boost efficiency .

I don’t know, I think they’re getting more down-force than lift out of that arrangement.

Yeah, I’ll be curious to see how they manage that, short of IFR...
