It was finally dry enough out yester day for me to get the lawn mowed. We have had one or two dry days this month so far, so the grass was pretty high in half the area I mowed (6-8" roughly). I forgot to take a before picture. The front long is half hay field I swear sometimes. No fancy turf or anything here, and I had the bagger on.
Overall I was extremely impressed at two things, One: The automatic variable blade speed. The mower senses higher load from thicker grass and speeds up the blade speed as needed. This came in handy in a few areas that would normally bog the crap out of my gas push mowers. Two: The range of the mower. I was able to mow exactly how much lawn I was hoping for. The pictures show my front yard, sides, and middle area. Behind the garage is a similarly sized large backyard. I typically had to stop and refuel the push mowers around the same mow time, and I would usually take a water and cool down break before mowing the back yard anyway.
The recharge time for the massive battery, with included quick charger, was roughly 40 minutes to 4 full bars, or 1 hour with full charger cool down. The rapid charger is a little noisy with it’s air cooled fan, but if you leave it in the garage you would never know.
I also used the self propelled feature for most of the lawn, mainly to slow myself down since the grass was so high, and I wasn’t sure about the capabilities of the mower. I also used the mower battery to run the weed eater the day before I mowed. I attempted to top off the charge but the charger did not register that it needed charging.
TL/DR:
I would say I really like the features the EGO 56V 7.5 Ah mower has to offer. It is my first bagger and I took advantage of that, the range is perfect for my needs, it is about as quiet as a mower two blocks away, the motor didn’t bog like my gas mowers, the variable blade speed system worked well, and the self propelled worked well even with the hard plastic wheels. I also really like that the whole thing folds up and I can store it upright in a much smaller space. This also makes cleaning the deck out much more convenient. The battery fully re-charged and cooled down, ready to use again in about an hour.
The cost of entry of this mower was fairly high for a push mower ($499) however, if you did not want a self propelled version, it knocks off $100. It certainly lived up to my expectations, I have much much less maintenance, easier storage, quieter mowing, better portability, and no more gas jugs!
This mower gets the Nerd Racing seal of approval!

Thank you for the detailed write up. I have thought of electric mowers but all ready invested in a suite of dino juice machines that need to last a bit longer.

My biggest motivator is that I’ve had horrible luck with push mowers lately. I decided to try something different. I did plenty of research to figure out what range I could live with. If you have more than half an acre and want to do it all in one shot, gas is probably the best economical bet. The EGO tools all use the same battery, so I could probably pick up their pole saw and gain another 5 Ah battery and do my entire lawn, but it’s kinda pricey.

We have the non-self-propelled version. It’s actually our second one. I bought the 20" one when they came out, and my wife ran over the water main access point and fubar’d the motor. Bought the newer 21" one we have now. I won’t go back.
My lawn is smaller than yours, though. My entire lot is .165 acres, remove the house, driveway, and sidewalk, and we can mow the thing on a single charge with room to spare. I also think I have the 5 Ah battery. My impressions are about the same. It’s so good we’ve neighborshamed several other houses around us into getting one.

I’ve hit one of those access covers before with a gas push mower. It did some serious damage. Oof! I don’t care too much about perception of the neighbors, just want something reliable that myself or the girlfriend can use easily. She is excited to mow the yard next time it needs it, so I’m calling it a win!

We didn’t set out to do it, but I think the quiet nature of the mower is really what sold it.

I can’t believe how much more enjoyable the mowing was with how quiet the mower was. Plus it was always cool when the blade speed kicked up too. I’m going to try the next mowing with the side discharge. If I get the same or better range I might look into getting rid of my rider, then I’ll have room for two cars in the garage again.

The mulching is what we use all the time, it’s actually very good. No bagging, no side discharge, etc. Just fertilizer.

Great writeup. I just purchased a new(gas) mower this summer as the runtime for the battery just wasnt enough for me to mow (if i do it straight, no breaks, i hit 1:45, bagging takes 2:30). I like to power through and get it finished as quickly as possible, and a second battery is almost as much as the mower.

how much area can it cover before it needs a recharge?

This is my 5th season using one and I still like mine a lot. I’m on the same battery with no noticeable decrease in life so I’m happy.

That’s longer than my gas push mowers lasted, between deck rot and engine failures.

F or big yards the battery tech isn’t there yet.

I would say it covered a very rough 1/3 acre. If I had the grass at a normal height and didn’t have to mow a jungle, it would have probably done closer to 0.4, which is my entire yard. I will hopefully post back an update when I get to that point. I’m currently remodeling my bathroom by myself so it might be a while before the back yard gets proper maintenance (limb pickup, raking, and proper edging.)

I agree with you, I had about an hour run time with mine. My full yard, properly maintained would be maybe hour and a half. outside of peak lawn growing season, I could see it maybe being possible with the mower battery and the 2.5 aHr battery that came with the weed eater.

haha i mowed last night too and my mower was like when the F did we move to the Serengeti??!!? The edge of my back yard floods and has really good soil so while my fro nt yard just needed a little trim here and there, my back yard was about a foot tall in places.
Its good to see people doing shit on their own. A bathroom is no easy battle.

It’s about time that electric mowers became more mainstream. That's what I'm going to probably get when I move into a house.

You’re telling me! My girlfriend wanted a jet tub so I told her if she paid for it, I’d install it. She called my bluff.

Wow, they’ve come down in price. My non-self propelled 5ah version w as $499 two years ago.

haha thats actually kinda cool. Back at our old house, I told my wife I could make a wine cabinet. She said no, so I knocked the wall down one day while she was out and said we can have a whole in the hall or a wine cabinet. she went with the wine cabinet.

Nice! The hardest part will be getting everything to the point where I can start putting drywall back up. After that, should be much less intense. I had to re-plumb the entire house, nothing was quite right. And I had to replace a lot of cloth wiring.

Funny enough, I bought a lawnmower about two hours ago. I went with gas because it was a much lower cost of entry and my yard is huge (the front is smaller than this, but not by much). Maybe in five or ten years when the tech is there I’ll move up to an electric one. Maybe I could've done it with the mower you bought, though...

We have the same mower, and our section is about 1/3 of an acre. We can do the whole property on one charge if the grass isn’t too long to wet. Best thing about the mower is that my wife is happy to mow using it :-). I get better run time because I don’t use the powered wheels, but it was worth getting the move with the powered wheel (see above re: wife will to mow with it :-)). It is a good mower.
