Which is funny, because   people that live in luxurious NYC apartments voted for Trump. They just don’t want to be associated with the “lower” classes.

I’m sure the association with the president isn’t doing it many favors, but I also wonder if its location and age might have something to do with it.

Ya’ think? I couldn’t hazard a guess. But I have a thought that may be tangentially linked to your comment: I read a headline on The Bulwark referring to the “Great Patriotic Trade War.” Are Trump’s base happy enough with immigration, SCOTUS justices, abortion, LGBT takedowns and tax giveaways that they’ll suck up financial pain in order to go to war with China on trade ? We’ll see. And if so, then I’ll have to credit Trump with reading the political will of that part of the country.

Everything. Everything , is horrible about that man. Unless you want the politics he’s delivering. And delivering, he is.

I hate that his Chicago tower (aside from some odd interior lighting at night and the giant gold Trump name) actually looks pretty good in our skyline.

Though, I can’t say I’m surprised as t he architect for it was Adrian Smith.

Yes, I might wonder the same, if I’d thought of it. If the story had been reported by other than Bloomberg, or WSJ, I’d not have posted it.

Wah wah wah. Had he run as a democrat, which was equally possible (the republicans were “easier” by his own admission) , rents would be through the roof. NYC is the bluest of cities. I’m surprised they haven’t stopped eating pizza thanks to it s red sauce.

I’ve come to the full realization that when it comes to politics, everyone is a shitbag. Hell, if I won a campaign , I’d be a shitbag.

Better! I had a really really dark turn during the weekend, but I have since pulled myself out. :)

My family drama endures as ever, but I’m getting better and better at blowing it off. Telling my parents no is actually kinda fun!

At least he still has his name on it. His four residential towers on the Upper West Side have all banished his letters.

As someone related to rich east coasters, most definitely.

Trumps doing a great job at appealing to lots of different self centered people.

Tax cuts and reduction in social services and regulations   for the rich.

Attack on immigrants for the working class.

Attack on LGBTQ and women’s reproductive rights for the religious fanatics.

I’m not a Trump supporter, but have no problem with someone wrecking China and Iran’s economy. Stuff from China is  artificially cheap because they basically enslave people and have no concern for environmental degradation, and Iran is run by religious fanatics.

My issue is that I know Trump just wants to make us into an American version of China and Iran, because an ignorant populace is easy to manipulate.

I'll say this, pretty much every Trump building is like that. There are quite a few issues each building has behind the tacky walls and gaudy faux gold elevators. This article doesnt even scratch the surface and there is a lot better available floor space elsewhere.

To be honest, I think a person is defined by their actions. By all accounts (friends, coworkers, etc), I’m not a shitbag. However, I know full well that I am capable of being one. I think most people are CAPABLE and that given the right circumstance (like a insatiable need for holding office), a person will perform shitbag actions and become a shitbag.

I’m not a blue person (or a red person for that matter). I describe myself as 500km N orth of center. Living in California is a daily reminder that a one party system is even more of a disaster than a two party system . Fundamentally , people will vote in their perceived self interest and when one party dominates the message , then the elites are able to control the population without opposition.

This is why my toll dollars are going up to $9 per bridge crossing towards building HOV lanes in areas that don’t need them. The elites of California convince the populous that they’re good for the environment and fix traffic issues (neither of these are true), when the truth is that what they are building is Tesla-lanes for the elites to zoom past traffic in their exempted red-sticker electric cars. Further, they know that their voter base has one of the lowest vehicles-per-household in the country so getting people to vote yes on increasing bridge tolls really only hurts “someone else”.

Make no mistake, that’s what politics in California is all about: hurting someone else for your own gain under the guise of the environment, the greater good, or ethics. Believe it or not, California ranks #1 in the country for least regressive taxes (i. e. disproportionately hurting the poor) in the country. That’s because that’s not counting fees and penalties . That’s the true death spiral. That money is then shoveled through to “projects” which goes to contractors, typically the friends of politicians.

Anyways, end of rant.

I hope I did not give you the impression that I thought you even might be a s**tbag. I was purely joking around.

I correspond heavily with another Oppo, a certain attorney, and you and he would likely agree on a lot of what you’ve said here. I think nothing brought everything you’ve said to light more brightly than the bullet train debacle. My progressive BIL sees it as an unfortunate thing that happens to people when infrastructure projects are indicated.

Do you live in the bay area? You and I might have a Car and Coffee sometime.

Believe it or not, California ranks #1 in the country for least regressive taxes (i.e. disproportionately hurting the poor) in the country. That’s because that’s not counting fees and penalties .

I don’t fully understand what you’ve written here. Will you expound a bit, por favor ?

I really love California as a place to live. Weather, country, all of it. But the politics are, as you describe well, despicable. And it’s rained a lot this year, so we can put off meaningful water policy discussions for another year or two.

I got your sense of humor. I have a dry Massachusetts sense of humor so I tend to respond back dry, haha.

Yep! I’m up in Richmond. We should definitely do C&C. That certain lawyer and I are friends on F acebook after meeting at Radwood , haha.

Regarding regressive taxes:

https://itep.org/whopays/

Scroll down to the ITEP Tax Inequality Index . California ranks last.

https://www.mackinac.org/V1992-01

This is an old article, but very quickly describes the phenomenon . Hesitant to raise taxes, politicians raise or create user fees. In California, building a new house requires about $25k in fees before you even break ground. B ridge tolls are user fees. Smog abatement fee($20/yr ) that is charged on cars 8 years or newer is a user fee. That one always makes me laugh: you pay a fee because you don’t need to pay a different fee (smog check). Most of these fees are regressive because they hurt the poor more than the rich. Someone working a $4 0k/yr job cleaning toilets in SF isn’t going to be living in the city. They’re commuting in from the East Bay in a 20 year old Camry. When bridge tolls get raised to $9 so that people in Walnut Creek have a special new lane for their Teslas, that’s a regressive fee. Compared to the old fee ($6), you just took up to $3k/yr out of a poor person’s salary. That’s bullshit.

To me, what is proves is that no matter what the structure (regressive fees or taxes), a one party state will always find a way to keep poor people poor because there’s a human incentive to maintain a status quo - stability gets your re-elected. Washington state has insanely regressive taxes (less on the fees), yet it has a near perfect mirror of California’s struggles with poverty and homelessness.

On the water topic - I can’t stand it. There’s no rationality to either side of that debate. The “save the fishes” people can f-off just as much as the “save the farmers” people. That’s another one that has devolved into one side wanting to hurt the other more than either wants an actual solution. The state has more technology than any country (let alone state) in the world and it basically gets ignored in favor of malicious PR campaigns. Screw that.

guy has been a fraud forever...only thing good that will come from his presidency is I think it completely shatters his branding business...and in that, him. The only people in his corner now are the GOP because that’s all that matters to them. When he’s a civilian again people are going to flee his shadow en mass .

I don’t know how he’ s been able to hide from all his shit for so long, but everyone has seen it up close now, every day in fact, so everybody knows the scam. That means the people always left holding the money bag in the past are going to stop holding it and he’ll have no choice but to.
