Trackhawk does not = common everyday car:

I would say most of those are not common everyday cars (though they may be based on common everyday cars). The ones that are common probably can’t actually outrun the police. And regardless of who you are, you can’t outrun the radio.

30 common everyday cars whose drivers think they can outrun the police, which proves to be true for a few miles till they wrap themselves round a lamppost:
1 Subaru WRX
2 Subaru WRX
3 Subaru WRX
.....
28 Subaru WRX
29 Civic Type R
30 Nissan S kyline GTS

Police have a helicopter. Your car, no matter what it is, cannot out run that.

‘Skyline GTS’ oh man, that addition is too real. I can totally see someone thinking they’ve basically got the Calsonic Godzilla trying to outrun the V8 cop cars in their little ~200HP or so non-R Skyline.

Where I live they’re a contender for “most riced car owned by youngest kids”. Want the 2F2F image but got no cash? Get a JDM Skyline coupe and go wild with cheap mods.
Consequently they feature strongly in single-car-accident and police chase stats. Though a long way behind Imprezas.

Police helicopters usually can’t go much past 150. Plenty of cars that can outrun one of them, given a long enough stretch of open road.

And regardless of who you are, you can’t outrun the radio.
Sure you can.
All it takes is evasive maneuvers and enough power to get ahead and
out of sight from the guy radioing in your last known heading. Not that I condone such a thing. but saying it can’t be done is patently false.

Outrunning a helicopter isn't that hard. The problem is the rather poor fuel economy most cars have at that speed, and their small fuel tanks.

Ahh yes, that magical stretch of straight road with no other traffic on it that you will definitely find and the police won’t. It’ll also lead directly into a foreign nation with no extradition treaties with the US. It’s the bank robbery part that’s hard. Getaways are easy!
Also, here’s another dose of reality; outrunning an aircraft is not the same as outrunning another vehicle. The whole advantage to a chopper is that it has almost no restrictions in it’s direction of movement and an extremely wide cone of visibility, vs. a car that can only go where the road is and can only be as fast as the slowest obstacle . It doesn’t need to be faster than you to spot you wherever you’re going, and you will slow down to avoid inevitable obstacles (or stop entirely after hitting something and taking non-recoverable damage)
Life is not a game of Need for Speed. Once the chopper is out, you will not outrun it. E ven if you technically can, you definitely won’t, and that doesn’t matter anyway since it doesn’t need to be as fast as you to maintain track on your position .

Counterpoint:

This video actually demonstrates the extreme difficulty of outrunning a chopper. For almost the entirety of the chase, the car’s position was monitored and tracked by the helicopter, and this information was almost certainly being shared with forces on the ground. For 90% of this chase , the getaway car’s whereabouts where known . If a chopper can still track your position in real time after you’ve ‘outran’ it, you haven’t outr an it. If outrunning a chopper doesn’t mean nullifying the advantages it has over you, outrunning it doesn’t matter. We see here how outrunning the chopper works in real life ; even when you can, you can’t.
We should also note that law enforcement has a responsibility to try to end chases like these with minimal-to-zero loss of innocent life. Protect and Serve and all that. At 19:43, you can see that the hellcat passes a police unit. A takedown attempt could have been made right then and there, but that would have likely compounded an already dangerous situation. Thanks to the chopper, we know where he’s headed, so it’s best for the safety of everyone on this crowded freeway to let him pass and try to take him down somewhere that isn’t a busy freeway. Fortunately for everyone, he ran out of gas and that became unnecessary .

I’d put the Golf R and Focus RS in that category as well, but you’re right that there’s a lot of WRX dude-bros who think they’re invincible and can outrun the police.

Back when I AX’ed the 2011 Elantra Touring the WRX bros that showed up hated that thing sooooo bad. With good tires, strut braces, and EBC brake pads I was consistently the fastest stock hatchback (there was a guy with a bonkers modded CRX that was unbeatable when it was running right) and often in the top 5-7 at the event.

Maybe to some extent, but it lost the police chopper and ended up being picked up by a news chopper and their big lens, that’s what you’re watching in the video.

And the police have more than one helicopter ...
![]() 05/07/2019 at 02:31 |

The point is, you *can* outrun a helicopter in a car. If the cops don't know where you are for even a few minutes, it can be enough to hide/get away. It happens. The fact that the guy in the video was in a rural area with nowhere to hide makes that almost impossible to do, but it can be done. People do occasionally evade the cops, though it's not usually by just outright outrunning them.
![]() 05/07/2019 at 02:33 |

It's usually one police helicopter and a news helicopter (or three) that actually follow the pursuit. I've seen chases where the cops lose the guy and the news helicopters find him first.

Fucking news helicopters are the reason I can’t sleep in on Thanksgiving - the Macy’s balloons are blow up on Central Park West, so the goddamn things turn around over our building starting around 6:30am ....
