Kinja'd!!!

For a while I’ve been rallying my mom to get rid of our aging, yet somewhat-reliable-for-a-Mercedes 2009 ML350. She’s been in the market for one of these GLAs, and today I found this nice one on Copart. Wish us luck.

A used Mercedes from Copart is going to be a nightmare of epic proportions.

The missing square tells me this isn’t a good idea. A GLA from one of those luxury dealers that specializes in auction cars from Florida and the Northeast, however, would be a great value.

Already been inspected, doesn’t seem that bad for a n Infiniti-shared merc

Something happened to have an insurance company deem it totaled and send it to auction. What was it?

Why on earth would anyone buy anything besides a parts car on Copart

Yeah... I’d say run... If you had an inspection done, clearly they missed a lot... That front panel fitment looked a bit off to me..

Panel fitment is terrible. Color matching is terrible. Everything that goes to copart is terrible. GLA’s are kinda of crap to begin. This is a bad idea. Your 164 is much better.

If you go through with this deal, don't go running around complaint how shitty Mercedes is when things start going wrong.

Inspector was an idiot. Ended up getting a refund because another oppo person showed me a pic of what it looked like under the body

Having purchased 3 cars from Copart in the last year, nothing is as nice as it seems in the pictures. Personally I wouldn’t spend more than $600 on a car from them.

Speaking as someone who worked at a Mercedes dealership, a GLA is not an upgrade from a W164 in any way, shape or form, and that includes reliability .

Like I said, everything on Copart has been totalled. You don't find deals there unless you are looking for parts cars.

Reliability is  arguable. I've seen way more CLA/GLA hit 100k on nothing but oil changes than 164's.

That’s fair, the diesel and AMG W164s had their own sets of issues and some climates are kinder on cars than others .

Canada seems to chew cars up and spit them out and pretty much every used Canadian CLA or GLA has, at the bare minimum, rattles that will drive you nuts. We had them in the shop for all sorts of things whereas the W164's failure patterns were much more consistent (mostly just power lift gates and AIRMATIC components, occasionally transmission valve bodies and intake manifolds beyond 100,000 km )

Rattles on the shit boxes for sure, but honestly we don’t see a ton of issues on them outside of warranty. A few valve bodies. Otherwise repairs are mostly the result of people damaging them.

164's would get water leaks and take out the rear sa m, or front sam and central  gateway, including whatever wiring and CAN connectors require repair to go along with. We get a ton of rain here and pine needles like to block water drains when not regularly cleared out. But they have lots of interior plastic parts break too like sunroof switches and window switches. Thermostats, cam magnets, and so the things you mentioned.

Seat heaters were the other things to go on the early W164s. It’s quite annoying to have those malfunction on a chilly Canadian winter morning.

As for the CLAs and GLAs, I’ve seen sunroof issues, keyless go issues, transmission issues, mirror malfunctions, stop/start system malfunctions, a couple of lighting issues, d istr onic issues, etc. Mostly stuff that some people could live with and mostly stuff that I suspect only fails because of our cold climate  but nothing consistent like the W164s.

I know this is a statement of personal preference, but I’d rather own a car with a few known faults at consistent mileages than own a car that’s a total crapshoot.

Yeah there’s a partial warranty coverage extension on those now.

I’ve probably seen one or two of each of those too, but much free and further between. Mostly just CPA warnings because people play bumper cars and damage the radar sensors.

Agreed. I own an R-class after all. Much better than the little shit box twins. Unless we’re talking 45's. Those are sweet, but very high maintenance. Still not anywhere near as cool as an R63  though.
