Yeah, it's the onions. Blame the onions.

Kinja'd!!!

And then there was dinner. The usual al pastor and barbacoa. What can I say - I know what I like.

I went and visited my friend in hospice today. It’s a very nice facility, but I wish I didn’t have to go there. She’s being well cared for, and I hope that when I pass on it will be somewhere that pleasant.

She was heavily sedated and unconscious, and apparently has been like this for the last few days. She seemed to be having some trouble breathing, but I guess that shouldn’t come as any surprise. It looked like she’s lost a bit of weight as well, but once again, n o surprise. That staff said that she was quite a spitfire when she first got there but has faded in the last few days.

I held her hand and said my thanks, not knowing if she could hear me or sense that I was there, but I’d like to think so . She’s had a rough life, some of it self-inflicted, but I just want her to be happy at the end, knowing she was a positive influence on a number of people. There’s not much left to do at this point except to wait for word of the inevitable. I am just grateful that her ordeal is almost over and that she didn’t have an extended period of pain and suffering. A similar thing happened with my favorite grandmother, although in her case it was about two weeks from diagnosis to her passing.  Best just to get it over with...

Sorry about your friend and it’s good that you got to see her. I have been through something similar with my stepfather and it was really difficult. It was good  for me to see him and say my goodbyes at the end .

I’m sure that she can at least sense your presence, and is grateful for it.

So sorry about her.

At least the tacos look good.

You have a very strange interpretation of what Al Pastor should look like.

Otherwise, my entire family is freaking out about my grandmother’s dementia... she’s basically a matriarch for the family and we seem to always be discussing how to take care of her best. It’s slowly getting worse... I don’t think she’s going to be lucid by 2020 at this pace.

I think that part of the respect that we should have to life, needs  to be extended to the very last days of it. I’m certain that even if your friend was under an anesthetic, you showing up is in and of itself a respect for her process.

On side of the border it’s more like carnitas with an oily red marinade instead of being carved from a spit as in middle-eastern cuisine. Still tasty even if it’s not 100% authentic.

Dementia has to be the worst. Last summer, when visiting my folks, we had a party for friends and family. One of the guests, my mom’s best friend’s husband, someone I’ve known as long as I can remember, seems to be exhibiting signs of Alzheimers. I remember seeing his own father go through it 30 years ago, and now I’m seeing the same signs in him. He’s been his wife’s caretaker since she went blind about a decade ago from a bleed in her brain, and now they’ll need to rely on their children to care for them. One daughter can’t have anything to do with doctors and hasn’t been too one in ages. In fact, she couldn’t even take her own kids to the doctor, with her husband having to deal with anything medical. The other daughter lives just down the street and had been caring for her mother for years, but she herself is a medical disaster, and there may come a time when she is unable to lend the assistance needed. I’m just grateful that my folks are still sharp and relatively healthy; I'm 1800 miles away, and my sister, although she lives just a couple of hours away, doesn't interact with her own family very much.

Yeah, those look like carnitas... shoutout to the Mexican Coke.

I think that the hardest thing to deal isn’t my grandmother herself... She’s a sea away from me, so I don’t really get to see her deteriorate... I do get to see the toll it takes on my father, my uncle, some of my cousins, even my grandfather.

It’s not a situation I’m equipped to handle yet. I’ve never had a close relative or friend die yet... but I think the way things are developing might end up being very complicated.

I rarely drink sweet drinks, preferring just purified or carbonated water or tea, although with tea I have to be careful. In California tea was tea, but out here in the Midwest we’re c lose to the south, and thus everywhere you go they have both unsweetened and sweet tea, and you’d better be specific about which one you want lest you end up with a drink that looks like tea yet will destroy your teeth with just  two sips. That stuff is just a tad too potent for me, and might drive me into a diabetic coma.

W hen I do splurge and have a soda I make it count, going for the good stuff with real cane sugar. Coke used to be advertised as “the real thing”, yet now, in order to get the real thing, in the classic bottle and with the classic sweetener, you have to go for the imported variety. It's worth it, however.

It’s totally the wrong color in my opinion. Mind you, I’m from north of the border so my concept could be skewed.
