Not that I was looking for an M5, but I’ve been passive-aggressively looking for an E28 for a few months now. This ain’t gonna help prices.

It’s my fault. The prices on M5's and E28s in general skyrocketed shortly after I sold my M5 in 2011. I regret it. I still see my old 535is every day too, a coworker has taken it to 300k miles. Excellent cars, I’d love to have another one someday but it’ll have to be a 535 because M5s are now out of the question.

Also, it is just hard to find one in reasonable shape not on the west coast. I’m not opposed to making a trip out from Houston to get one, but with 4 kids and associated activities it is darn hard to fit it in my schedule.
My current theory on why there aren’t many / any that come up in Houston is that the floods over the past 5 years have ended up totaling all but the show quality cars. With a population well over 4 million in the Houston area there should be more around.

They just didn’t make that many. According to the forums its like 119k total chassis produced for the NA market. Take out the m20 powered examples and you’ve got about 90k cars http://www.mye28.com/viewtopic.php?t=38992
To put some perspective on that in 1988 alone Ford sold 380k Escorts

I drove a friend’s 1985 535is a fair amount back in 2005 and man, I loved that car. It was just so, so good. Even pretty recently I’ve seen them in pretty good shape for well under $10k, but I think they’ve bottomed out.
