If you read my previous post regarding a GTI purchase, I went and looked at and am still having an internal fight with myself on if I should buy the GTI or not. I’m about 50/50 on it at this point. I decided to do my due diligence and go check out the only other new car that really grabs my attention, a Stinger 2.0 Premium.
Price wise, it’s not too big of a difference between the 2. Drove down to the Kia place in the 911 so there would be 0 temptation of buying on the spot. What a scummy joint. That car could be damn near perfect and free and I wouldn’t give them the sale.
I started with a simple, “I was driving by and just want to look at what a Stinger is like.” Told them I don’t need help, don’t need to drive it, don’t need to take any of their time. The salesman was a young guy, and he got it. I wasn’t buying anything.
We did the car guy thing and talked cars, he answered some questions, etc etc etc. I thanked him and started to walk to my car. He asked if I would come in and enter a drawing for a free Sorrento. I told him that’s OK, and asked if he gets credit or something if I did. He says yes, so I tell him that I’ll go fill it out with false info so he gets credit because I don’t want calls or emails. He says that’s fine and thanks me.
Fill it out, and I get up to leave after thanking him for his time, and here comes the scummy sales manager. “What do I have to do to earn your business today?” Nothing, just wanted to enter the drawing and see how it looked. “What payment do you want?” I don’t discuss payments on something I’m not buying. “Come on, you came in, what can I do to take that car off your hands and have you drive off in a new car?” Nothing. I told you that I didn’t need help, I was driving by and wanted to see what your car looked like.
He asked some other question, not sure what it was, I thanked him for his time half way through the sentence and walked off. The sales guy followed me out and apologized, said he is new and told his manager that I wasn’t a buyer but he insisted. I told him not a problem and asked about the market adjustment stickers adding $8k to every car. He was sheepish but said it was so people would see the value in all the extras they offered with the purchase of a new car but it was always negotiable.
Ugh. Nice guy. Ryan, thanks for just being a nice helpful guy. You deserve better than that shitty Kia dealer.
For those wondering, this is the GTI that I may or may not own by this time tomorrow.

Jeez, what an asshole. Kia dealers, unfortunately, are notorious for that kind of crap. In my experience, Honda and Toyota dealers are pretty bad, too, but YMMV.
The GTI looks gorgeous - good luck!

LOL typical Kia dealership but I’ve had great experiences with our local one. We bought a Niro from them and I tested the Stinger GT2 from there as well.
Can’t go wrong with the Oppo car of the year though. Interested in the Jetta GLI at all?

Kia dealers always seem to have some sort of greasine ss to them. Too bad for that young guy, I’ve been there and he’s just trying to do his job. He needs to find a better dealer.
Hope to see another GTI on Oppo, that Tornado Red is looking good as always!

Markups on Stinger’s is so last year. They can be had with huge discounts.
Having said that, get the GTI. You’ll love it.

The dealer network is a big problem as Kia tries to move upmarket. My Kia dealer is a lot better. They let me drive a Stinger while I was waiting for my car in service. The girl only asked me once if I was going to come in and talk about buying it. When I said not today, but I do love the car, she said no more about it.
Thankfully for me, my dealer seems to generally get the idea that treating me well is more likely to sell me another car from them when I do buy.
By the way, I really liked the Stinger GT1 I drove, even if it was only for a little bit.

We went to test drive a Forte5, and they tried to trick my wife into signing a credit check. All I wanted to know was a cash price. It took them 3 tries just to get it down to what they had it advertised for on their website.
Super scummy, super shady, and after that credit check stunt I didn’t listen to a single word they said afterwards.
The car was weird too, the paint was clean, but there was a ton of dirt and dust caked in the areas between the windows and the body around the windows. Lost of dirt in some of the plastic creases. It had definitely been sitting for awhile and I didn’t trust it at all.
I’ve also had really scummy experiences with a Hyundai dealer service department on the other side of town from that one too. At this point you couldn’t pay me to walk into any Korean car dealership.

This seems like a uniquely American issue.
All the Kia dealers here have behaved exceptionally nicely with me. When I first saw the Stinger (a Nitro Blue with white interior) they didn’t mind opening it, or turning it on, giving me space
and I never mentioned anything about buying it. The next time I went we test drove and
were even told about all the stingers Kia Mexico had available:
Even in competeing dealers. We ended up buying the car from a dealer in Veracruz that offered us a 3,500 dollar discount
and the right color/interior combo
, and they shipped it to us. When they delivered it the manager, and a technician came to explain the car.
The only dealer that ever treated me like crap was a Porsche dealer. I was looking to buy a 1:18 911 as a gift, and I swear they would almost not let me in. I parked behind a (I asume the Manager’s) Panamera and as I was talking with the secretary about the model car (short answer: Fuck you) the rest of the sales staff went outside and started looking at my car with disgust, as they compared it with the base model Panamera next to it. One even kicked the wheel.
Anyways, no scale model car, and I was also not allowed to
walk
near the GT2 they had in the floor. I left at the same time as the Panamera infront of me, and the dude somehow found necesary to race his car to the intersection.
trying to fucking race me?
granted, this was one porsche dealer in Santa Fe, the one in Polanco and Interlomas have treated me much nicely.... I got to sit in a Carrera GT once!

The Stinger is at least interesting. The GTI is a snoozer. I really don't get the appeal. Everything about every VW I have ever driven or ridden in seems so bland. It's a fine car, nothing more.

Damn, that’s shitty. Sorry you had a lousy experience.
This is no shit, but the best dealer experience I had was when my wife and I got a CPO Ridgeline from the Honda dealership in Salinas, CA. This one salesman there was a former roadie for Slayer. No, really. On top of that, he was nice as can be. He even went so far as to go over how to turn on the lights and use the controls in the truck when we took delivery. Over a period of several years I bought/leased four different cars from that guy.
Goddamn, I wish he was in Utah.
