First some background. I’ve owned a LOT of cars. Right around 50 at last count, and I’m 42 years old. Most of those are old beaters that I’ve bought fixed, drove for a few months and sold, but there are quite a few new ones in there too.
What’s my overall favorite car I’ve ever owned? My 2016 GTI. Hands down. Yes, better than the 911. Last January I decided that I really needed something bigger than my GTI (the 3rd I’ve owned), sold it and bought an Outback 2.5 Limited. Very nice car. Good mileage, ton of space, easy to park, comfortable, goes through anything.
However, I’ve REALLY been missing my GTI. Casually car looking as I do I see that my dealer has a leftover 2018 GTI Autobahn in. DSG, driver’s assistance, exactly how I would want it, and almost $8k off.
Talk me down, Oppo. I just got USAA to approve me for a loan, I’d have no problem affording it. Tell me I shouldn’t go toss them the keys to my Outback and come home with a new GTI to put all the parts that I kept from my last one back on.

Get the GTI! What color is it ?

I think you should do it, unless you NEED the space of the Outback, America's most versatile vehicle.

I suppose the question that needs asking is why did you dump your old GTI in favor of the Outback last time? If the answer to that question is no longer valid, go for the GTI. Bonus is that the 2018+ cars come with a lot more warranty.

Going from a GTI to an Outback must have been like going from a new Apple computer to a machine running Windows 95.
Do it. Or at least get a Golf Alltrak and Stage 2 it.

You will have a hard time finding someone around here who will tell you not to buy the GTI.
I will answer that call.
Buy a WRX instead.

You came to the wrong place. We talk you up not down here.

Don’t not buy it.
DO NOT not purchase it. Outback is a great car for VW dealership to have.
Am I doing it right?

What 911 did you have that you liked less than your 16' GTi? I’ve driven a lot of both and the only 911 I think I like less is a base, beat, 996...or any ragtop.

Keep the Legacy. Buy something crazier and more fun then the GTI.

Best thing I can say is that you decided you needed something bigger. So were you wrong? Or is that still going to be a problem? Should you be looking for a sporty wagon instead?

I’ve been in a couple GTIs, driven one and drive a 2012 turbo beetle and I prefer my boxster s engined 996 cab(that I often drive with a hardtop) to them because (brace for stereotypical Oppo) naturally aspirated, rear wheel drive biased, and it’s small size. So I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it.

I’m not saying that the GTI is better at everything than my 911 (996 C4 Cab). My 911 handles better, has that amazing steering and a great sound. I like being able to enjoy things with my family and the 911 isn’t something that the whole family can come in, plus I’m not hauling stuff in the 911. It’s an overall thing. The GTI is fun that I can share with the whole family and still commute in.

My head hurts. I think you want me to go buy a Guilia.

Eh, I’ve got a 911, 4Runner and Odyssey too. Crazy and practical are covered. Great thing about the GTI is it is everything in one.

Way too red.

It was kind of an impulse decision to get the Outback. Nothing can haul better than my Odyssey, and my 4Runner can go off-road.

That’s it. After reading that I’m going to start morning drinking.

I mean I’ve got GTI in my name and own a 2017, so the only answer you’ll here me say is..

Only thing that can stop you from hoarding cars is if you enforce this on your self -
One car in, one car out.
Bonus points if you gift the one car out to an Oppo! lol
Get the GTI, give me the Outback!

Understood and I’m a big fan of the GTI/R. I sold my S3 a few months ago. I stuff my family into the fun cars, or we take two. I’ve got the only ragtop I’ll probably ever own. I like it and I’m not looking to get rid of it, but I’d avoid another.
