As you might’ve seen, I got caught in a bad hailstorm. I got an estimate so now it’s time to guess the amount.
For more pics and videos of the damage, see my last post on it.
Additionally, the first person to guess the rough estimate of hail dents wins an extra 5 internet points!
EDIT: BrianGriffin got it, the estimate was $3175. Now y’all have to guess the number of dents

PDR estimate or body shop?
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:31 |

I have no clue, so let’s say $7k
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:33 |

Hmm let's go with $7001

I personally say leave it, the dimples will help keep the air attached. Makes the car go faster. Not as much as speed holes however.

PDR at a body shop

$3.50
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:36 |

I’m probably gonna make a claim, either buy it back and bank the cash or get something newer/lower miles
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:36 |

somewhere in between
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:38 |

Okay, I'm thinking $3.51

S ingle panel or multiple panels? How many dings per panel?
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:49 |

$1350
But, I vote leave it. I agonize over every scratch in my Jag, to the point that it makes me miserable. But one time it got hit by a tree branch that left it with a golf ball- sized dent on the roof . I told myself I’d pop it out with a kit, but I’m lazy and now it’s just a thing.

not too far, a little bit more
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:51 |

as I’d mentioned in the previous linked post, it’s the roof, hood, trunk, both passenger doors, passenger fender, and passenger quarter. Only panel being replaced is the trunk
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:52 |

higher
I’m planning on doing the claim (it’s enough to total), and depending on the money, buy it back and rebuild it, or get something new (to me)
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:53 |

$ 2970.52

pretty close, a little higher

I got you now! $ 2970.53 and a packet of skittles
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:55 |

$3250. I say leave it or heat gun and a plunger ;)
![]() 03/28/2019 at 20:56 |

nailed it

I’ll give it to you, you’re $75 too high, the estimate is $3175

I’m late, but I was going to say $3k because it happened to me, and that’s what it cost.

Plans? Drive as is? Total it?

I have a question now about “buybacks.” When people total their newer cars, for instance, they get a payout from insurance and the car goes to Copart or something. Why can’t they just keep the car and have that payout go to repairing it?
Or, for you, how are you able to keep the TSX? Why isn’t it just going to Copart for hail damage?

You can ask the insurance company to buy it from them (with cars new or old). The thing is most people aren’t going to do that specifically because buying back the car and fixing it is going to cost more than buying a comparable used car. And on top of that, you have the hassle of a branded title. The buyback only makes sense if the car has significant sentimental value (so you can’t really buy a comparable car) , not repairing doesn’t greatly decrease the car’s value to you, you can live with a lower quality repair, and/or you have the skills or connections to do the repairs cheaper.
Most people are just way better off getting a different car.

Thank you for letting me know! I’d seen other instances about buying back cars. It sounded illegal, but it makes sense now.

Opps, missed the link. With truck and PDR about $2,000 maybe?

It’s $3175

Exactly what facw said, the insurance company gives you the option to buy it from them before it heads to a salvage auction. The reason I would do it would be if I wasn’t given a reasonable amount of money to buy a decent car

Drive as-is for 2 months, then make a claim when life calms down and I’m back home from college. Our insurance agent has been notified of it, so they’re okay with it. It’ll very likely be totaled then, so either buy it back if they don’t give me much for it or just get something else if they give me a decent amount for it

Wow, how much of it was just the PDR?
![]() 03/28/2019 at 23:00 |

$3,175? It looks like you’ll be competing with Calzone to find the best cheap car in the northern United States!
![]() 03/29/2019 at 00:36 |

It’s PDR on a low estimate of 200 dents, plus labor on trim removal and replacement, some paint work, and then replacing the trunk and blending the paint
![]() 03/29/2019 at 00:50 |
|
It’ll be totaled when I make the claim. The car is worth about $3500, but my insurance company is known to be generous with their payouts

Wholly molly, 200 dents!!!
![]() 03/29/2019 at 01:12 |

250+ , according to their rough estimate. They’d need to mark all of them, but that’s their guess.
