>V6 Firebird with T-tops
Okay, so why not?

PT Cruiser and Exploder...definitely not. I get not buying the Firebird because sporty RWD car + kid = trouble. I kinda want it for ME though. :)

Make sure not to buy a car with a roomy backseat, that’s how the show Teen Mom came to be...

Eh, we bought my sister a V6/auto camero convertible of that era and there is not much particularly sporty about them and they’re certainly not fast.

But red Firebirds are immensely practical tho...

All true, but the insurance ... No thanks.

My first car was an explorer, so was my second actually, and I’ve had one other as a winter beater. I know the popular opinion is that they are garbage, but all 3 were very good to me.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 09:55 |

Why not the PT cruiser? They seem to be decent vehicles, aesthetics aside, plus her friends won’t want to ride in it, so less distracted driving.

My sister in law’s school friend got a manual PT Cruiser for her first car. I was surprised to find that such a thing existed.
Also I had to laugh at the “well maintain” Explorer with a rear fender full of rust. You maintain you car, but couldn’t be bothered to take car of the rust befit got this bad?

It’s a hatchback after all

Honestly front seats work just fine

Eh, there are worse options than the Firebird. Back in the day we bought my sister a V6/auto camero convertible of that era. They’re a 200hp lead sled with a 4 speed auto and a tall rear end on the V-6 cars with a real soft, conservative suspension set up, which is to say that they’re slower off a stop light than any minivan on the market today. A 2010 Honda civic has more lively suspension from an inducing oversteer via mistake kind of perspective.
She liked the car because it looked good. It was also significantly cheaper to insure than the (v6) Mustangs she wanted at the time. The downside to the car was that it was a 90's GM product with all the shit design and abominable build quality that went with it. Truly, the car was a amazing design accomplishment. It was a huge car that somehow managed to have no room anywhere. The trun k was a very odd sized, deep, thing that didn’t hold much of anything, the backseats were only the realm of the under 8 years of age crowd or a couple of grocery bags, the hump in the passenger side floor that allowed space underneath for the catalytic converters meant there wasn’t much room in the passenger seat, and the huge by volume engine compartment had no space anywhere you actually needed it. Seriously, look up changing the #7 and #8 spark plugs on an F-body of that era.

If you bought her the firebird, you could borrow it. Just sayin’.

I like this one.

You can haul at least 8 large easels or 250lbs of steel or 4 wheels and tires.

When we got my sister’s, it actually wasn’t bad for the circumstances . She had a couple of minor fender benders prior to it, so her insurance wasn’t going to be the cheapest on any car. V6 mustangs (which is what she wanted at the time) on the other hand were scarily expensive to insure.

Bench seat with column shifter leaves a large amount of room

Awhile ago my brother was car shopping and lamenting about how there’s not any options for manual, RWD, hatchbacks, so I sent him several listings for Firebirds and Camaros .

Dirty, rusty PT for over $2k?!?! LMFAO!
Why not on the Firebird?
![]() 03/28/2019 at 10:13 |

Yeah that’s on my radar I’m not very excited about the air bag light though.

Thanks but no thanks.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 10:15 |

Eh, I found “base” Camaro/Firebird/Mustangs weren’t really any more to insure than regular cars. If it had an SS/TA/GT/Z28 badge on it though you were in for trouble.
Funnily enough I could buy a base model with the V8/5-speed and it was cheap, but the slower z28 with the V8/auto was through the roof.

Make them pay for insurance.

My wife would take one look at that car and would veto it back into the stone age based on looks alone.

Maybe you should look at the pictures of the one I posted.

I take it she’s not a fan of the get your kids hooked on racing/sportscars/at least sporty looking cars and they’ll never have time, money or energy to get into trouble doing other stuff philosophy. :)

Haha, yea ok maybe not that one!

There’s no way that’d fly with MrsGolem it doesn’t matter how slow it is it only matters how fast it looks.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 10:26 |

I’m not really into all that either. She did say they could drive my rat rod because she thinks i t’ll never be together again.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 10:27 |

It looks fast and I don’t really want to put her in a rwd car in the snow.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 10:29 |
|
Personally, I much prefer RWD in the snow. Far easier to control direction with the throttle IMO.
Teach her how to handle it before letting her on the street shouldn’t be an issue.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 10:53 |

Buy it, disguise it with fake Volvo panels made from cardboard boxes. Then have LittleGolem take her for a ride. About the time she realizes it’s harmless, the panels will start peeling off, like a 90s teen comedy.

This one seems like a great idea:

But seriously, either of these old Honda’s look pretty good:

Nah

Are you conferring with your insurance agent as you look? My first thought on the Firebird was how expensive the insurance would probably be. I think even the V6 gets classified as a sports car for insurance. Never mind that it is out-performed by a modern Camry.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 21:01 |

I would guess it’s a simple sensor, but you never know. I just think it’s cute.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 22:45 |
|
I intend to make my daughters pay for their insurance, as my dad made me pay for mine as well. I wouldn’t want to saddle them with something extraordinarily expensive to insu re though. My first car was a 2-door “sports car” which despite being front wheel drive and being slow as dog shit, even with my good student discount and no claims/no points history, cost me $2700 a year to insure back in the late 90's. That was a big burden that would have been better spent elsewhere.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 22:46 |

Interesting... Must have something to do with the claims history of the type of buyers who buy each of those.
![]() 03/28/2019 at 22:46 |

Now that is weird.

Just about every teenager I knew outside of SCCA wanted a mustang at that time . In this area at least, it was the default af fluent suburb kid car of choice for everyone but the hard-core car nerds . By that point the C amero had been discontinued, and the by then long ago dated design of the fourth gen kind of looked like a penis on wheels anyway. Ending up with a Camero was not nearly the desired outcome, and I would guess the claims experience re f lected that not nearly as many kids were crashing driving 90's and early 00's Cameros. They were certainly wadding up mustangs left and right with the insurance premiums to match.
![]() 03/29/2019 at 07:12 |

Maybe, I just found it funny.
Same went for my Eclipse when I owned it. The RS cost about as much as anything else, the GST-GSX were through the roof. It didn’t matter that my RS was tweaked to 220 whp, was lighter, and far more dangerous than those....................

The wheels are nice.

The answer? Carbon racing buckets!!!

My Trofeo cost me a freaking fortune to insure. $2700/ year despite having a good student discount, and no points/no claims on my record. When I replaced it with a three year old V6 rw d S-10, the insurance dropped to like $1300 a year. Despite the fact that the S-10 was way faster, way more valuable, and could be a much bigger handful to drive in bad weather.

Yeah, but there is no room in the back for shenanigans. That should always be #1 priority when shopping for your daughter’s first car.
