Crazy how cheap these things have gotten. Pretty low miles too, and 6MT (edit, actually SMG) ! But ooh boy, gotta have deep pockets for maintenance!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

You could buy that 500hp V10 monster for cheaper than this thing (which is asking waaayyy too much I think for a pre-LCI non-Sports package wagon) -

That M5 is actually an SMG.

I need to find one of these rear-impacted at auction to swap into a clean wagon body.

The E60 does somehow seem to have become a “forgotten man” amongst bimmers. I’m intrigued by the value for your buck that E60s are giving lately - as an E70 owner I’m certain they’re not the easiest/cheapest to maintain, but as long as you go into it with that knowledge, seems like some deals are out there.

Whoops, you’re right. Just saw the top of the shifter and thought it was a stick, missed the crappy paddles.

Haha exactly. Well my theory is simply that it’s a better deal than the E91 wagon also presented ...fight me!

Well here’s what you do…take the bumpers to swap in to your wagon.

Then just put a regular 525i bumper on this thing for maximum stealth.

Then once the V10 blows up (that’s the real risk here compared to other bimmers) – stick a 525 engine in it and call it a day, having gone full circle.

I see where you’re coming from on that, and the wagon *feels* overpriced - it’s not a particularly well-equipped car.

But the market seems to be putting these wagons at a premium, so I don’t think the price is too terrible - however, I want service records with a used BMW or GTFO.

Yeah I lust after E91s pretty frequently so know that these things do command a premium. Most out there are automatics, which can be had pretty cheaply so know the manuals go for more. But for that money there are much more other intersting BMWs you can find with good history so hard pass for me being pre-refresh and light on packages that matter.

Exactly - unless you have a real strong E91 itch you need to scratch, get something else.

I think you would be better off buying Hoovie's M5 when he puts it up for sale.

A number of things here are worth noting, since I have extensive experience with an E91 325xi AT wagon, my deer-totaled E90 328xi 6MT, and my E61 535xi 6MT wagon. I drove my parents’ E91 for the last three months (Yes, THREE MONTHS!) while I was waiting for the transfer case to be replaced on my E61. I just picked my car up last Thursday.

(The repair time was so ridiculous because the shop that was subcontracted to rebuild the transfer case did it three times in a row and failed each time. At this point, the shop I took the car to asked for their money back from the rebuilder, didn’t get it, and is now suing the rebuilder. They got me sorted with a used transfer case with a 3 year/ 100k mi warranty in the meantime.)

1. That E91 wagon already sold, presumably - the listing has been deleted.

2. The RWD 6MT N52 is probably the most reliable, lowest maintenance BMW drivetrain in history (perhaps tied with the M54 - the M54 probably needing more maintenance but having no chance of an expensive Valvetronic failure and a cheap to replace water pump).

3. The E91 wagon has substantially more cargo capacity than the E90 sedan, even when the sedan has the fold down rear seats. The E60 has about the same space as the E91, in a less convenient package, but with a spare already in the bottom of the trunk when in non-M guise . The E61 is a black hole of space, with no intrusion from the wheel wells into the cargo area, a spare under the trunk panels , and still a ridiculous amount of storage in hidden compartments. It has about twice the space of the E91.

4. The E61 535xi is frighteningly expensive to maintain with high mileage. I am now somewhere north of $20k in maintenance and repairs in 21-odd months of ownership, and that’s with a large proportion of work done myself. Half of my drivetrain from flywheel back has been replaced or rebuilt. The RWD 6MT 525i E91 would have required maybe $5k to do the same amount of work. The E60 M5 scares me, but I have a hard time imagining that anything short of a rod bearing or SMG failure will make it cost as much as the E61 535xi to maintain.

5. The precise and perfectly weighted steering feel in the E91, even with xDrive, is much better than the light and slightly vague feel in the E61 (non-M).

6. The E61 (non-M) has a ton of body roll in comparison to the E91, even with Bilstein HD shocks. However, once you’ve picked a line and it transfers weight in a corner, it will hold that line as well as the E91 - and better if the road is rough. It just doesn’t turn in as well.

7. On the other hand, the E91 (xDrive at least - I have never ridden in a RWD one) does not ride well on rough roads at all. In particular, large bumps and potholes will either bottom out or crash the front struts. The xDrive cars (at least) don’t have nearly enough suspension travel for rough roads. The E61 is much better, and is even quite smooth on rough roads. It still cannot handle large bumps like deep potholes and railroad tracks very well.

8. The ground clearance of the E91 (even the xDrive) is low enough that if you drive in deep snow or occasionally drive on unmaintained roads, it will be a problem. The E61 requires much less attention to bottoming out due to its extra 0.5-1 inch of ground clearance.

9. The N52 xDrive E91 and N54 xDrive E61 get similar fuel mileage, despite the difference in power and weight. The E61 loses out a little on the highway - but the larger fuel tank partly makes up for it. I would expect the RWD E91 to be noticeably better both in town and on the highway. In comparison, S65 from the E60 M5 drinks fuel like a college freshman drinks alcohol at a welcome week party, and the car subsequently has a pitifully short range.

Yeah an E91 with RWD and manual transmission is very high on my list of “forever dad cars”. But the later ones are crazy expensive, and even the earlier ones are getting up there. In theory it’s the perfect car, but where prices are going there are too many other good contenders.
