From a safety stand point it’ s not a magical cure-all because like anything it soon becomes second nature to you and you can definitely get distracted on a freeway especially.

I say that because forums love to make blanket statements which I hate, like “If only everyone drove a manual, we’d all drive safer”. Stricter overall driver training, licensing and enforcement helps more than anything . There are plenty of second and third world countries where the manual is the norm and people still find a way to get distracted by cellphones and what not, and there’s still a ton of accidents.

having said that, it does make a positive difference by keeping your hands and feet engaged and away from the damn cellphone , especially if you’re a teenager, it’s a great learning tool.

I commented on someone’s post about this yesterday and I’m still catching heat for my hot take, but I stand by it. If you want to take this argument to its logical conclusion, we should all be riding motorcycles. It has better visibility and you need to pay attention, so it must be better!

This so much. I never get why people think manuals immediately make drivers less distracted. No, once you get comfortable you can text & drive, eat, do whatever in a manual.

I know I texted a fair amount in my last car which was manual (I was younger/dumber & don’t really now ). Better driver education is key and understanding that whatever someone’s sending you can wait.

They’re not a bad vehicle , by any means, especially as a work car. That’s just a catch-all term I made up long ago for people who just don’t care about cars or driving, which I’m confident is most Prius buyers, based on personal experience . I know there are exceptions such as yourself, but you’re unfortunately few and far between. Carry on!

Yep, manual enthusiasts: Ma nual transmissions are not burdens because you quickly adapt and shifting becomes an automatic reflex.

Also: Manual transmissions require you to pay much more attention and so you’ll be a better driver.

These statements conflict, and I’d wager the first is much more true than the second.
