Just stuff like tech/safety/comfort. Not type, engine, transmission, driveline, size, brand etc. In order of must have/good to have/don’t care.

Kinja'd!!!

Must have:

Comfortable seats with at least 8 way adjustability and lumbar support, bonus points for thigh cushion

Heated seats. No compromise on that even if I live in the South and use it only for 4 months.

Auto dimming mirrors

Good Sound system. Tinny base model shit won’t cut it.

Android Auto- my next car is several years out and I hope it’s standard by then on every car at every level, at least retroactively installed.

Rear seats vents, if not climate control. Also at least one USB port in the rear seat.

60/40 folding rear seats

Volume knob or at worst volume control buttons on the steering wheel.

Rear view camera with guidelines and parking sensors. Cars these days are getting worse in visibility and this has become a necessity

Good to have:

Cooled seats and heated steering wheel- As much as I love them making this a must have will severly restrict my options.

Heads Up Display

LED/HID headlights

Sunroof

Dual Zone climate control but almost every car comes with it these days outside of base models

Auto Emergency braking and adaptive cruise control

Rear cross traffic alert

rear sunshade

Don’t Care:

Navigation

Any lane keep watch anything system

Any level of autonomous driving

Digital dashboard

Auto wipers, Automatic high beams

Ambient lighting

Smart trunk, remote start, smart key access

I would say things like 60/40 folding seats are a given, but every time I come across a car that doesn’t have them, my brain breaks a little bit. I can’t even imagine this...I don’t think our family has had non-folding seats since a 1981 model car.

I just want some damn lumbar support and an interior color other than black. After I got rid of my 128i I said my next car was going to be like that, so naturally the 3 lacks lumbar support and has a black interior. Other nice to haves would be auto dimming mirrors and Apple Car Play.

The most comfor table seats I have ever experienced for my body type was the Charger/300. Of course, I have never driven a Volvo but I’ve heard nothing beats their seats. Might consider one just for that, or a used Lincoln Continental with 30 way adjustment just for the heck of it, plus fast land boat.

Ahh, the passthrough. I always saw those advertised with skis, for some reason. That just doesn’t resonate with me. A couple boards of lumber and a rake, maybe. The ski thing always seemed sort of elitist and esoteric. The number of people who ski AND take their own vehicle to a resort is pretty small in terms of the total population. And for everyone else, they’re not really aspiring to that.

“Hon, as soon as I get this promotion, we’ll get us a passthrough and finally take the family skiing!”

I would pay extra to get navigation and auto braking and lane warning/watching the hell out

I would pay extra if my next new car had a manual transmission. Naturally aspirated. I don’t want no blowers, spoolers. nothing. Give me raw power.

if not convertible, i definitely want a sunroof.

I don’t give two hoots about stereo. I want to listen to my engine roar.

Colors. Lots of colors to choose from. And no damned upcharge for those colors.

Controls should all be in a logical place and not require a learning curve.

My demands are pretty slim and that’s probably why I’ll be right back to VW again within the next year. I don’t mind slightly worse reliability in exchange for a car I don’t hate every day, or that doesn’t put me to sleep when I drive it.

My GTI came with a lot of features that I was longing for coming from an 08 Civic. - Heated Seats, HID headlights, CarPlay, Keyless Entry/Start.

I’m satisfied with those for now, but can dream in the future of adding - ACC (if car is automatic), Cooled Seats (if leather), Auto Dimming Mirror, Good Stereo, Ambient Lighting (GTI has minimal version of this and I’m suckered in now), & Sunroof.

Could go without - Lane Keep, Auto Wiper/Lights, Auto Start/Stop, Fake Engine Noise generator.

My wife wants adaptive cruise control/auto brake , lane keep assist/lane departure monitor, and heated seats at the bare minimum. She’s done with driving and wants to go auto drive into the future as much as possible, but we haven’t budgeted for a Model 3 (and they keep killing off the cheaper trims. )

I absolutely require :

1. bluetooth audio (a godsend when I get work messages while driving)
2. USB ports for my music
3 . Rear camera
4. Blind spot monitors or panoramic mirror option

Nice to have:

1. Moonroof delete (hate em, never use em )
2. Chilled seats
3. Front and side cameras
4. Android Auto (very glitchy in the Chevy atm)
5. A subwoofer
6. Memory settings for mirror, steering wheel, and seats
7. multiple 12V plugs
8. A/C v ents for the rear seats
9. Tire PSI monitor (not just TPMS but an actual PSI reading)
10. Foldable rear seats
11. Push button start
12. Very bright white headlights and auto headlight activate
13. Auto park assist suite
14. Fun phone app for the car (measure oil, mpg, psi, etc)

Don’t care:

1. Lane Keep assist
2. Nav
3. Heated steering wheel (AZ burns hands anyway 3/4ths of the year)
4. Traction Control/Stability Control
5. Auto dimming mirrors
6. SiriusXM
7. A- pillar airbags
8. Leather upholstery
9. Digital dash
10. CD Player

9. Tire PSI monitor (not just TPMS but an actual PSI reading)

It was reeeally hard earlier this year to end up buying an Outbackthat didn’t have Android Auto/CarPlay – especially having had it (aftermarket install) on our prior car. But this is for my wife’s car and with her being a stay at home mom these days it wasn’t a deal breaker. We decided the factory phone integration and nav was decent enough to not have to buy a 2018+ just for that (we bought a CPO 2016). But come next time we’re buying a new car it should be standard across the board and will definitely not buy something without it.

Also wife hates any gray/silver/white cars with a passion, which I appreciate – so it better be readily available in decent colors. Other than that a rear climate control zone and vents would probably be high on our list. Heated seats are agiven and pretty standard on the types of cars we’d be looking at – cooled and heated wheel would be nice. I also foresee our next car seeing a lot of camping and outdoor activities, so while we don’t need an overlanding rig something fuel efficient and practical for that type of activity and capable enough to get us to a campground and back will be a necessity. Our neighborhood also sees a decent amount of snow that doesn’t get plowed, so ground clearance is nice to have.

So yes, we’ll be likely buying another Outback. Hope the next gen is a good step up, new Legacy seems pretty promising for what it is. XC60/V60 may also be a contender , but not sure if it’s actually worth the added cost and reduced capability given what we actually need.

Next Car meaning next primary daily driver/road trip main car... this does not include hobby vehicle which could predate most of these features, or utility workhorse that doesn’t need as many amenities.

Must have:

rear view camera.... ok, given, because it is now the law. Wish my ‘07 truck had it, love it on my ‘14 Jeep, though.

rear sensors.

heated and cooled seats, the spouse will likely say heated steering wheel also.

seat/wheel/mirror/settings memory. I *HATE* trying to get in when the spouse has been driving all the cars since the last time I did, and I can’t even sit in the seat because it is way too far forward and high.

remote start. heat in the sub-zero winter, AC in the 100+ degree summer.

keyless proximity entry and start. the keyfob stays in my pocket

remote rear gate. - I open it (and start the engine) as I walk out of the store, it is open by the time I get to the car and load cargo.

leather seats. Cloth is ok when sitting, but annoyingly pulls at my clothes getting in and out, and stains if you spill anything, and stays wet if you come in out of the rain.

radar cruise. (and by extension emergency braking)

HID headlighs, LED lighting otherwise.

Good to have:

Heads Up Display - would be awesome...

FULL LED/Laser headlights - would be awesome above the mandatory HID level.

Sunroof... agreed. nice to have.

Dual Zone climate control but almost every car comes with it these days outside of base models. - agreed.... intuitive controls

Rear cross traffic alert

front distance sensors or surround-view cameras. - a short driveway would be better... I can’t leave the rear bumper in traffic, but I hate bumping my garage door with the front of the car... the driveway is angled, and one side is THAT short.

Navigation. Theoretically I could do without it... but seeing street names before I cross intersections, and getting a bearing on a specified address can be handy... and Navigation is becoming ubiquitous on well-optioned cars.

Any lane keep watch anything system - lane keeping I could give or take, but I do like the blind-spot monitoring aspect, and usually those come together.

Variable AWD modes and air suspension ride height.

Digital dashboard - partial or full. Nice in that it doesn’t have real estate taken up by idiot lights... when all is well the regular info can use that space, and the warnings make the display adapt to reveal them.

Auto wipers, Automatic high beams - nice... if they work right. Toyota’s high beams worked great... the Jeep’s high beams are very inconsistent, and I end up setting them to manual.

Could take it or leave it...

Ambient lighting effects.

automatic parking

autonomous driving.

voice commands - never really got into the habit of talking to my devices/cars.

sunshades (other than sunroof), I usually have tint instead.

OnStar remote call-center features.

My ‘14 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland has most of the stuff other than the take-it-or-leave-it list, not HUD although I wish it did.

It doesn’t have LED headlights, but it does have automatic High-Low HID projectors... previous ‘09 Toyota Venza had automatic HID low beams and separate automatic Halogen high beams... seemed like the optics were better having two pairs, rather than the shared projectors... hopefully LED would be even BETTER yet.

The toyota’s high beam programming was better, too, although no-passing-zone triangle signs on the oncoming side of the road would cause the high beams to cut off, even with no oncoming traffic.

The Jeep’s auto high beams can’t decide how to engage or cut consistently. Sometimes it is fine... then it will engage with oncoming traffic, or refuse to cut if an oncoming car appears... or won’t engage on an open road... It is really the only fault other than a delaminating leather dash. But just turning the headlights from Auto to ON disables the auto-highbeams, and then the stalk controls the high beams manually, just like any non-automated system, and that is fine... just have to remember to turn back to auto later.

The GC is treating us really well, and kinda spoiled us for amenities that we didn’t think we’d depend on as much as we’ve come to like.

I did take my skis to a mountain last weekend by threading them through my ski pass- through. It’s really not optimal though, since in a bag, you’d only be able to fit a pair or two, and out of a bag, you’d have to worry about them damaging each other, and creating a bunch of sharp-edged projectiles under heavy breaking. There’s a reason people prefer racks/roof boxes.

Maybe not so bad? A hollow wheel fed by a blower in the center? Wouldn’t be cooled directly but you could place the blower intake in the path of a vent, and just having the moving air would make a big difference.

I’m not sure why it should be heavy or large? A hollow wheel definitely doesn’t have to be, And I’m pretty sure your blower doesn’t have to be either (it would be much smaller than a standard blower). The biggest question to me would be whether you could do it without needing your blower (or blowers, I suspect two smaller ones , one for each side, would be easier to fit) to be excessively loud.

Heated and c ooled seats and heated steering wheel- As much as I love them making this a must have will severly restrict my options.

Heads Up Display

Good Sound system. Tinny base model shit won’t cut it.

Auto dimming mirrors

Rear view camera with guidelines and parking sensors. Cars these days are getting worse in visibility and this has become a necessity

60/40 folding rear seats

LED/HID headlights

Rear seats vents, if not climate control. Also at least one USB port in the rear seat.

Dual Zone climate control but almost every car comes with it these days outside of base models

Don’t Care:

Navigation

Auto Emergency braking and adaptive cruise control Rear cross traffic alert

Sunroof

rear sunshade

Any lane keep watch anything system

Any level of autonomous driving

Digital dashboard

Auto wipers, Automatic high beams

Ambient lighting

Smart trunk, remote start, smart key access

Well, if its feed through somewhere you need piping. Steering wheels are made out of plastic or wood (I think) and making either material hollow or feeding a pipe through it (over an edge) would make it thicker.

Then finding the way to feed it is still hard... adding more electronics to the wheel and stuff...

I mean, I’m pretty sure steering wheels are way thicker than they need to be from a strength standpoint. I can’t imagine making one hollow would compromise strength. It would make the construction a bit more expensive, but there shouldn’t be any big changes to the dimensions of the wheel surface.

My 335 doesn’t have folding seats or the passthrough. It’s got a surprisingly large amount of utility less than my A4. Cupholders, for example. Even the glovebox is tiny in comparison.

Bingo. I’m not slighting the sport here (I’m a snowboarder once every decade or so), but every serious skier/boarder I’ve known has a rack, box, or wagon for gear toting. It always seemed like a gimmicky way to say “See, you can put long stuff in our car!”

The pass-through is a game changer, it makes both of my E9Xs significantly more practical. Even fit a 55" TV in the M3.

Cup holders are pitiful in the E9X and the glove box is too small to fix the owners manual. Those two items can be somewhat forgiven; I just have to hold my drink whenever I take a corner.

This will be a little difficult, as most of my requirements are type, engine, transmission, driveline, and size, but I will do my best.

Must Have:

· Driver’s seat

· Towing capacity of at least 1000lbs

· Subwoofer (aftermarket will suffice)

· Bluetooth (again, aftermarket will work)

Good to have:

· Passenger seat

· Heated seats

· More than 30 MPG

· Towing capacity of at least 2000lbs

· More luggage capacity than my miata

· Cruise Control

· Airbags

Don’t Care:

· ABS

· Traction Control

· Stability management

· Any type of screen on the dash

· Any sort of smart features

· Any sort of self-driving (except cruise control)

Heated seats- once you have them you can’t not have them.

Eh...my wife’s car has them and while they are nice they aren’t a deal breaker for me. I think I’d rather have a heated steering wheel than the seats to be honest.

I would argue all cars have seats front and rear, in the Miata those just happen to be one in the same.

Must haves are 4 doors, short box, with 4wd. Purchased with  cash only. That limits what creature comforts 08 and older Chevys come with. Intact cab corners are a bonus.
