I’m looking to build a desk similar to pick related, but without the cabinets. However, I’d also like to have a little thing that flips up on the side that I could extend the desktop, like what college lecture halls have, although it wouldn’t have to be flush with the rest of the desk . It would be used for holding a notebook or book I’m referencing while I’m working.

Does Oppo have any advice on how to design or build something like this? I’ve made furniture before, but it’s been a while.

I’m hoping to make this with just a small table saw, wood glue/clamps, and a drill.

Also how fancy/decorative could I make it without needing additional tools?

Pocket hole  screws are amazing. Google Kreg jig, and learn.

I have exactly what you are talking about from when I was in school. Wife uses it for sewing now. Look up plans for a typewriter table with folding sides.

You can get folding shelf brackets on Amazon for n ot a ton of money. Order a pair and find a piece of wood you want and the rest should come naturally

Get yourself a Kreg jig. I’ve got the R3 set and it is so nice for making things with hidden screws.
