As part of the work on the Chevelle, I’m rebuilding the engine wiring harness. There’s plenty of old stuff which can be removed, and some which can be replaced. Plus - there’s always stuff to clean.

After taking measurements of the harness as-is (such as where the branches sp lit out, and how far they do so), I removed the wrapping and then about half of the harness, which had n’t been connected to anything in quite some time anyways.

Weight reduction?

With this out of the way, the harness would be ready to clean the wires and re-wrap if I were going to keep the points ignition - but I’m not, since points aren’t keen on high-power high-revving engines.

From left to right: firewall connector, ignition coil, wiper/washer motor, coil of wire (switched 12v feeds I kept from removed circuits), starter trigger

In part 2 we will replace the resistor wire (and the bypass wire) with a regular 12ga wire (probably the orange one I removed above). Eventually this will be cleaned up, re-wrapped, and be good as new to go back into the car.

Wow, that is much simpler than I expected. I suppose it is from 1971.

Very simple indeed. The other harness which has the lighting, charging, and horn circuitry is much more involved.

Ah ok, that explains it

HAHAHAHAHAHA YOU THINK THAT HARNESS IS INVOLVED.

Pictured, the ‘main’ connector set for the SSJ’s engine harness:

Yuuuuup, that’s 60 pins, every one used.

20 of those 60 go to expanders where they multiply again.

None of the lighting appears anywhere on these harnesses .

The k ey phrase is “more involved” above.

I used to troubleshoot locomotive main control cab wiring. Those are thousands of conductors, all white.

Read carefully before insulting people.

Or, crazy thing, the guy who specialized automotive electrical (which trust me, is FAR worse - k nowing it’s Br/Yl is fucking useless when it’s CAN or CCD ) is taking the opportunity to bitch about how obscenely complex shit has gotten.

“Oh, it’s not that bad!” I wasted two fucking hours trying to figure out why a horn isn’t working, despite every switch, relay, and conductor in the path testing good. Twice. And it still doesn’t fucking work . Except when it does .

And t hat 60 pin harness is the least complicated shit I have to deal with. Oh, I have a simpler harness, from an older car. Which is chock full of ‘shit gets weird just because you spliced it’ because they used that to save on cycles.
