[Ta-Ha-Ra] This guy has some serious pronunciation issues but I really liked this tiny insight in to the building of Toyota’s “J” trucks.
Also, as an aside and to keep me busy during my very boring conference day a question:
Land Cruiser? Or not Land Cruiser?
I’ve got my opinions and reasons for them, I’m just curious how you think about it.

Well, that’s a new one. Most of my American former coworkers pronounced it “Tuh -HAH-ru h”, so I’m used to that and the proper Japanese pronunciation, but this is the first time I’ve heard “Tuh-hair -ru h”.

I don’t understand why they didn’t update and keep selling the FJ cruiser. They already sell the 4Runner and they still sell the FJ in other markets.

simple - Toyota didn’t understand that retro design has a short shelf life and so when that shelf life didn’t jibe with Toyota’s policy of long model life on their trucks the result was a declining sales model that they wrongly attributed that to poor market conditions.

That’s depressing. A shortened 4Runner or Tacoma with a body would probably sell well, too.

Cruiser is right in the name.. only die-hard mud crusties make arguments against.. Somewhere in Oz right now they are arguing the same thing about Prados.
I still want one
..

my opinion is that it is. That being said, if the standard is that it needs to say “land cruiser” on it someplace then no, its not. My test is does it have the letter “J” in its model designation. Kurt Williams says it isn’t one.

I’d be more inclined to take Akio’s word that Kurt’s. I mean, I like the guy and he’s pretty awesome, but he didn’t build it.
One of our Foresters bought one brand new
in 2006 when they came out, she put on
a little lift,
and bigger tires
, and that was it. It looked
just right.
Even these days FJC catch my eye all the time.
