Buddy of mine recently was rear ended, not his fault and car is totaled . So he is looking for a new car
Wants
-max $15k
-Open to sedan, coupe, and wagon
- No SUVs or Trucks
-Drive type or transmission doesn’t matter (no CVT)
-Sporty and over 200hp
-Reliable, so no European. And don’t @ me, not my call
-Highly prefer under 100k miles
-He is not a fan of VQ motors but could persuade
Cars I have suggested
G8, GTO, Civic Si, TL, TSX, v6 Accord sedan or coupe, Camry v6, v6 pony cars, Lexus Sedans, Genesis coupe, FiST, and BRZ
So is there anything in missing or would you recommend one over another?
![]() 03/11/2019 at 09:47 |

>wants reliable
>
looks at FiST.
okay then,
Lexis IS350 would be my choice. Audi S4 would be second choice. but no Euro. he is missing out.

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
Persuade him
If not, cant go wrong with an equivalent Acura or Lexus sedan.

Yeah that one was on the meh end of reliability but has the power numbers. And that is a good one. I actually forgot about the IS. Are the 250 worth it? or just find a 350?

I have a 250 AWD.
its slow. very slow. It makes a good noise, is super comfy and looks awesome (I have a 2nd gen car, still looks modern) but they are SLOOWWW. test drive one and you will see

You joke but could be the Correct answer just a 1994

Wow that is a bunch of good cars with super low miles. Anything to look out on these? I dont know Nissan very much.

okay his search is over.

They’re extremely reliable. But be prepared to shell out for consumables like tires and brakes- likes to eat rotors and pads, and some trim pieces start coming off as the car ages- known issue. Premium Fuel required and 18/25 MPG not great but pretty much everything V6 RWD/AWD from those years had similar fuel efficiency.
I own one since 2017. I cross-shopped the TL SH_AWD and that’s another solid reliable choice (2013 and 2014 are more reliable than previous years but may not be available for <$ 15K )

I had a lot of fun in my Civic Si. Its no rocket ship, but is a nice mix of great driving character, good MPG, and reliability.

Ok will take a look,
This is the cleanest one 350 I have found https://bit.ly/2Hevi4n

Clearly he needs one of these:

Let me rattle off some oppo favorties:
TSX Type S
IS300
GS350/460
G37

Yep they are very good cars. My dad bought an almost brand new (had maybe 15K on it) 2007 Si in Fiji Blue in 2008. Still has it and is a great car. Other than minor maintenance I dont recall him doing anything to it
![]() 03/11/2019 at 10:32 |
|
That is stuff he wouldnt mind replacing. Its the deeper dive stuff like anything on a BMW lol . And yep that mpg is competitive with the rest of the category.
And yeah I heard the early year SH-AWD need a bit more maintenance but he is also considering a base with tech package.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 10:33 |

With Acuras, it’s SH_AWD or nothing for me. I have driven both FWD and AWD versions and it’s like a different car altogether.

I t hits all of the check marks but I have a horror story with one of those 2.2T motors... So i wont be touching it
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:02 |

You won’t be touching a decent Spirit R/T under $15k anyway.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:03 |

Wait they made a Type S TSX? We have looked at the TL Type S and manual TSXs but never seen a TSX type S
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:06 |

Kind of f igured but I had a bad run in with a Chrysler TC by Maserati that has left me scarred on those motors.

Anything from GM with an LTG engine that has a service history. The SIDI motors absolutely require top end cleaning every 35k. Otherwise, pretty much bulletproof if properly maintained. (Feed the right oil.)
Ticks all your boxes. 259HP, 295ft/lbs (or 272HP, 295ft/lbs.) Sedans, coupes, and (sorta) wagons. AF40 automatic, or if you wanna search, 3 pedals in Regal. Easy to find under 100k and around $15k or less for off-lease examples in Buick, Chevy, or Cadillac flavor.
Cadillac ATS (272HP-260ft/lbs (295ft/lbs RWD) ‘13-14 , 272HP-295ft/lbs ‘15+)
Chevy Malibu (259HP-295ft/lbs ‘14+)
Buick Regal (259HP-295ft/lbs ‘14-’17)
Cadillac CTS (268HP-295ft/lbs ‘14+)
Cadillac CT6 (265HP-295ft/lbs ‘16+)
Chevrolet Camaro (272HP-295ft/lbs ‘16+)

My bad, I meant to say TL Type S
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:19 |
|
Damn thats what I was figuring happened... I loved the 3rd gen which was FWD only and we have looked at a Type S but way to many miles.
I s it more so the AWD carries the extra weight better or the FWD just stumbles over its self?
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:22 |
|
Ah ok, yep we have been looking at a couple of them. Trying to find a manual version but they are either high mileage or “I know what I have” owners.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:24 |

You are like David Tracy and Jeeps. Maybe there should be a rule that you can’t recommend any Chrysler product? :)
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:24 |

For sure, mine was a 08. Sold it at 100k, but probably should have just kept it since it never really had any issues.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:26 |

The TC is a completely different engine; anyone saying otherwise is talking out their ass.
The Spirit R/T has a Lotus-designed DIS DOHC 16 valve on late K block known for a propensity to crack. The TC’s a DOHC 16v Cosworth head based on the YB ( not the Mercedes 2.3) the on early K block.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 11:38 |

Yea, there’s a big price jump from a regular TL.
I am not sure if the price jump is worth it...

I havent heard good things about the early LTG’s and Piston cracking/Connecting rods . I have heard after 2015 they have reduced the issue but has not built confidence

Good thing the RT is the 2.5L TIII not a 2.2L TI.........

I am more than intimately familiar with these engines. The only cars affected significantly were RWD (prior to fixing a cooling system issue ,) and almost certainly fed shit gas. I would not be surprised if some of them were fed a steady diet of 85 octane piss. Fed 93 octane max 10% ethanol, they have a mile of headroom.
If you do nothing but detonate , doesn’t matter what it is, you’re going to fuck the pistons. The people whining about pistons are by and large talking out their asses. The only real mechanical problem was a batch of engines where they installed the completely wrong bearings (approximately 2 :1000) , which means none of those motors lasted more than a few thousand miles. And GM policy is to replace the entire longblock rather than rebuild, under the 10/100k warranty.

$8 -10k can get you a decent one.
A Spotless one is $15k+.

Here’s a relatively unknown 201 HP 1.6L Turbo sleeper. Kia Forte SX hatch. Kind of a Korean GTI with out the big maintenance costs . Low mileage 2015- 2016 models can be had for $15K. Hits all the criteria with a low grief, high fun factor ownership experience.

“Buddy of mine recently was rear ended, not his fault and car is totaled.”
But can we blame him anyway... just for fun?
On a more serious note... if he wants sporty, I would pick Honda/Acura over Toyota/Lexus.
And if you’ll consider a Subaru BRZ, then also consider a FRS/86.
And the Honda S2000 might be in his budget too.
And those are all what I would consider ‘high revving sporty’
If he wants lower-revving sporty, then a stock Hemi-V8-engined Chrysler Charger or Challenger with the Mercedes 5 speed automatic should be quite robust... though fuel economy will suck. The newer ones with the 8 speed automatic have better fuel economy, but I’m not sure if the transmission is as robust as the old Mercedes 5-speed.
And according to Consumer Reports, the Charger/Challenger are a bit more reliable overall compared to the Mustang/Camaro.

Ah ok I wasn’t unsure, just had heard there was issues . And the car that was t otaled had a GM 1.4T before which he strictly fed Costco 93, so he is pretty good on running top tier gas. Even if he couldn’t find a Costco it was BP or Shell.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 13:29 |

Yeah this one kind of was an unicorn as it didn’t exist. We swapped it with a manual 2.2T from a Charger so it was not stock
![]() 03/11/2019 at 13:46 |
|
Er, yes it did. J ust not quite that way. Anyone saying otherwise is wrong (as per usual.)
The TC had three engines in it’s life. The shitty Mitsu 3.0/A413. The “TC” Cosworth/Maserati 2.2 Turbo. A nd the Turbo II using Daytona parts with a different flash . When equipped with the 2.2/16v, it had the Getrag 284 manual 5 speed because the A413 liked to go boom . Well, since the Q was G based, it’s a tweaked version of the linkages from the GVS24 (early Daytona.)
So basically all you did was replace the garbage 284 with a 520 and regrets for losing out on the Turbo II. Then again, using a Charger sourced motor coupled to a 520, and probably with the TC’s shocks and springs instead of the GVS24 AGA , uh... yeah, not hard to see where the misery flows from.
Then again, I think the pre-1/1/86 GVS24 AGA’s springs are just right, so my take on the suspension may be biased.

I mean you can lol.
“ WHY WERE YOU JUST SITTING AT THE LIGHT?”
“it was red”
“oh” lol
W e have looked at multiple TLs and Accord V6 Coupes. I even found a Manual v6 couple for $13k.
The S2k is hard unless its beat or high miles
Yeah should have said toybaru twins cause i actually like the FRS/GT 86 better.
T hat is something to consider the Mopar LX platforms , and gas mileage doesnt really matter as I suggested a G8 GT
![]() 03/11/2019 at 14:54 |
|
I’m thinking more along the lines of:
“WHY WERE YOU JUST SITTING AT THE LIGHT?”
“it was red”
“WELL IT’S STILL YOUR FAULT!!!”
“why?”
“YOU WERE OBSTRUCTING THE SPOT THE OTHER CAR WAS SUPPOSED TO BE IN!!!”
lol
![]() 03/11/2019 at 15:02 |
|
I knew there was a manual TC but yeah the Mopar guy said it wasnt that way. And we swapped all sorts of stuff.
Again I by no means know much Mopar stuff, give me Honda I know exactly what your saying. But supposedly we swapped heads (I wasnt there) with the TC motor, Turbos, Intercoolers from a T4, and rear suspension from a Daytona because it had disks. Hell I was like a kid in a warehouse, they were throwing names out I had no clue about.
I was more so Manual Labor than anything else lol
![]() 03/11/2019 at 15:30 |

TSX is great! If wanting more power, there’s a V6 version and the newer TLX is falling into that price range
![]() 03/11/2019 at 15:34 |
|
-Sporty and over 200hp
This is one where Miata is not the answer
![]() 03/11/2019 at 15:36 |
|
... wow, yeah, your “Mopar guy” is completely full of shit. I can buy it not being a manual TC. But if he’s saying you put a TIV turbo on it? Much less calling them TIV intercoolers? The TIV’s intercooler is a TII intercooler! God damn am I so tired of assholes like that. Just... RRRGH. And ‘rear suspension’ from a Daytona? Uh, no , the rear axle.
But at least you can appreciate the rarity of an unmodified ‘95 Integra GS-R 2 door with sunroof delete.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 15:52 |
|
close enough and weighs less to compensate for difference in power . Certainly is sporty.
![]() 03/11/2019 at 16:00 |
|
Yeah sorry should have said rear axle and control arms. I was there for that one at least.
S orry I think it was just the inter-cooler not the turbo that was from a T4. The Turbo was from the TC. Daytona’s was locked up.
And found out too late he was p retty much was full of it. W e completed 5 laps out of a 12 hour Lemons race because the Mopar guys couldn’t fix it. It was backfiring and had no power. And the culprit? A missing Exhaust Rocker arm....
![]() 03/11/2019 at 16:04 |

Ya that was my mistake. It’s not the same 2.2L as the Charger or TC though.

Ecoboost M ustang could fit the bill.
