With the fleet remaining idle (car pun! ) for 2019, I now look to the future — with a path that is as foggy as ever.
First I was looking at extended cab 4x4 pickups — you probably don’t remember since I never posted about them once, all the time, every day. Then came the BoF SUVs, specifically a 100-series Land Cruiser. But lately I’ve been looking up Mk2 TTs and MR2 Spyders... I want all of the things, people.
I’v e also been back daydreaming about a clean manual E91. (Un)fortunately those are becoming far beyond my ability to acquire. I also did some research on the 128i, even though a car like that is totally not my t hing. “ You mean it’s not a non-running Tercel?” OKAY! Lay off, guys. I’m trying to E M O T E here.
So my goal is to acquire extra monies — if such exist, I don’t know. Haven’t lived in the new house long enough to really know how much it’s costing, plus my new IRA, new life insurance, whatever. I hope to have money nearing hummmm maybe 10 grand by summer of 2020 , and t hen just test drive *everything* I want and see what my heart tells me. How, or if , I can meet that budget goal remains to be seen. I have no intention of selling any of the current vehicles.
It’s gonna be a long year...

I feel that. I’m due for a big pay raise in less than three weeks, and I know I should be responsible, but the other part of me is going “truck truck truck”. Or wagon. Or Mustang. Nothing consistent.

I'm due for a not-a-raise since my job is so closely tied to the housing market. All the more reason to be conservative and really beat this horse to death at Oppo's expense.

Nothing wrong with being smart with your money.

Same. I want a super luxury car that’s fun to drive but gets 30mpg for my one-hour each way commute.
Edit: oh, and is less than $15gs. That’s the hard part.

Well you did just buy that Landy Boi... If you bought a second one, the total mpgs would be 30 (MATH!)

I strongly considered an MR2 Spyder before settling on the Miata. The main thing that sent me towards a Mazda was the lack of cargo room in the Toyota . That MR2 has no trunk, no space for even a duffel bag unless you take out the spare tire. So a weekend away for you and a passenger isn’t really feasible unless you travel with just whatever you can fit in the passenger footwell.

Can’t argue with that!!!
And it’s the wife that wants it to be nice and modern . I’d be in a 1980s Lincoln if it was up to me.

Yeah the MR2 is a car I’d drive in a big circle, some scenic stops with a bottle of water . NA Miata is incredibly useful, I drove my mom’s on an off during college while my civic kept breaking down.

Truck - blend in with your fellow farmers
Mustang - pretty standard choice
Wagon - the right answer.
I was at the Mission branch of your company and the parking lot was pretty bland. Be the difference!

10k? That's mint SC400 monies

How long until you join the wagon inner-circle?

Oh, I am painfully aware. So glad I passed on one 3 years ago. No regrets at all. Except all of the regrets.

That could also buy you a nice SC300 and a beater/parts car

I like that I can take my Miata on longer road trips. Speaking of which, if you want it I'll sell it to you and hand deliver it, mostly because it would give me a reason to drive coast to coast. Plus we're trying to save up for a house.

Nah, I think ending up with the Paseo was probably the best result. I see SCs with some regularity — I’ve seen maybe 3 Pa seos ever.

Is this you?

I would sooner by my mother's because I bet she can cut me a sweet deal

Wow, I wish. He has healthy looking skin, and a Corolla.

For consideration, I make my work parking lot very diverse. But I also can walk to work when there’s no emergency at the start/after my shift, and I can take my work truck home.
And the coworkers I know in the Lower Mainland drive CR-Vs, Pilots, Corollas, vans, et cetera, so yeah, I know.

a while I think. Unless a minty AMC eagle comes on market and they really want a Forte...

Well I'm not sure she'd give you the Oppo discount, but you're probably right.

What do you drive at work anyway?
![]() 03/06/2019 at 20:23 |

Either a Silverado, Tahoe, or F-150. Since we’re a rural area, we need the trucks and actual 4WD.

I too am planning on A) not buying any cars in 2019 and B) buying a car in 2020, but I have what I’m getting pretty well 95% set in stone.

It’s weird to actually feel confident in such a decision. We’ll see how that is in 13-14 months when I’m actually shopping.

First off, let me say, I love the German bend you are on; keep it up!
Second; I can really relate to wanting it all. Ideally I’d sell my turbo beetle for getting an A3 Quattro automatic; and get an older BMW manual wagon. But on other days I think I should just sell the beetle and the 996 cab and then get a WRX or older STI.
Third, good luck with the saving!
