Piecing together a little review of the Turo rental I used for my trip in L.A . 2018 Ford Flex SEL. Feel free to drop in any questions or comments you’d like me to cover. I had the vehicle for 5 days, and put a good 600 miles into it.

Were you able to “flex” on some haters in it?
Okay I’ll be serious, how was the fuel economy in it?

I didn’t want to make the obvious joke but I never said I wouldn’t star it.

How was the power and fuel economy?

NA V6. Really bummed when I found that out. Ecoboost is only available in the Limited trim. Still a respectable 280hp.

Are you at all surprised by how cavernous
the 2nd and 3rd rows are?

I was very impressed at the space. F it 6 adults and their cargo too easily.

Respectable power from the NA V6. 280hp is enough for the regular cruiser. I sure wish it had the 360hp ecoboost option, but beggars cant be choosers. Fuel economy was acceptable. I averaged 25.5 MPG on my trip.

yet the cramped, claustrophobic Explorer outsells this by more than 10 to 1.

Not bad. How was the wind/road noise level?

Damn shame.

My wife drove one of these for about 5 years, it was a 2010 in Limited but non-ecoboost. It started out good, but the electronics started to go, interior started to fall apart, then the transmission needed work. So it got traded in on a Hybrid RAV4 last summer. It had only 115k miles on it.
The Flex swallowed people and gear like nobody business (same length as a Tahoe!) looked interesting and ate highway miles like nobody business. It just didn’t hold up well.

I’ve always kinda liked these. If I have need of owning a larger vehicle one of these will definitely be on my short list.

We had the windows and sunroof open most of the trip. I never heard anything out of the ordinary.

There’s subtle, but significant differences between the 2010 style, and the 2018's. The first few gens carried most of Ford’s notorious flaws including electronics. It seems like once they faceli fte d the Flex, and added ecoboost option, it really grew up as a conten der.

The Ecoboost had been available from the beginning, paired with AWD. Mine had the 1st Gen Sync system a nd it was a nightmare!
The facelifted versions are more handsome overall. but I liked the two tone you could get in the original. Mechanically they’re all identical across the years.
Seats were comfy as hell and it got ok gas mileage, like 21 averaged with our mix of driving.
