This is relevant to my situation, as I have this week been fielding the petitions of students who want just that one more point on their tests to move up a letter grade.

Was the average a passing grade?

Well, the average from this last test was 87%, which is pretty high. I don’t know what the average for the course was.

That, sir, is unacceptable. I demand that you curve the grade so the average is 75%. After all, the whole point of a curve is to normalize the distribution whether the point range is below or above the norm.

One year when I was a TA, we had graders who, in theory, did our grading for us, but they did a really shit job. I made the mistake of telling my students that if they weren’t happy with their grades, they could petition me.
I’ve done a lot of stupid shit in my life, but nothing was quite as stupid as inviting a bunch of undergrads to challenge their grades.

Oh, I don’t change points unless there was a clear mistake on the test question. However, since my question bank is several years old, it’s well-vetted and there are almost no opportunities for making a case for more points.
However, I still listen to arguments, because that means the student learns something in the process.

Ooooh, I totally need this rig in my office. I should make a smaller version of this sign and hang it above my door.

Obviously not. The monitor is to the side, sure, but there’s still a lot of clutter on the desk. Those text books would have been in the garbage.

My first ever stint as a grad student TA, I met up with the professor on Saturday morning. He handed the tests over to me. The exam was composed of three essay questions about current topics in RNA enzymes. The class was a first year grad class, and I was a second year student. He told me that there was no real correct answer, because these essays were about new stuff in the field. He gave me a rough rubric of the reasoning he was looking for in the answers. He then said he was off to his kid’s soccer game. Grade them using my judgement. He said he’d back me up.
Once I stopped freaking out, I settled down and did it. And he did back me up.

Yeah, I learned my lesson after that semester. It got so bad that the professor had to announce a new policy that grades couldn’t be discussed with TAs, that they had to come to her directly, and that they’d probably leave with a worse grade.

A professor absolutely must protect the TAs. They are in no position to defend themselves.

I always gave students the opportunity to ask any question on the first day of class. Inevitably, someone would ask if I curved the grades. I always explained the purpose of normalizing the grades and told them that if I were to do this, I would hold true to the purpose and curve both up and down. Then I gave them the choice. I never once had a class take me up on that offer, although several probably should have opted for a curve.

My wife’s little sister came home with a Geography test full of horrendous spelling. She’s bilingual and often tends to spell things the way they might be spelled out if the word was in Spanish. Not sure if that makes sense, but either way, she got an A on this thing. I immediately asked about all the misspelled words and she said, “As long as the answer is right, she doesn’t care if it’s spelled right.” What!? WHAT!?!?!?!? I asked if she mentioned it or made any effort to have the students correct their spelling errors and she told me no. No doubt, Camacho will eventually be on the ballots.
