An Oregon man may have a good argument for not cleaning out your car.

Jeremy Taylor told authorities that he and his dog survived by eating packets of taco sauce as they were trapped by snow in his vehicle for five days.

The 36-year-old, who goes offroading in the area, said he drove up west of the resort community of Sunriver with his dog, Ally, when his SUV became stuck in snow last Sunday, the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

He spent the night in his vehicle and attempted to walk for help on Monday, but had difficulty because of the amount of snow that had fallen, authorities said.

“Jeremy stayed warm over the next four days by periodically starting his vehicle and used a few taco sauce packets he had as food,” the sheriff’s department said on Facebook. In an earlier post, they said that he wasn’t believed to have had a phone on him.

It wasn’t until Friday afternoon that a snowmobile rider spotted his car and called 911. Taylor and his dog were described as hungry but otherwise in good condition.

In a Facebook post on Saturday, Taylor described himself as “lucky,” adding: “Lets never do that again.”

Asked by a Facebook friend about the hot sauce packets, Taylor responded: “Taco Bell Fire Sauce saves lives.”

Authorities recommend drivers in cold weather climes carry a winter car survival kit with them that includes non-perishable food, water, blankets and a basic toolkit and first aid kit. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! can be found here.

If a driver becomes trapped in snow, !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! is run for just 10 minutes every hour to provide warmth while preserving fuel. If the vehicle is covered or surrounded by snow, first ensure that the exhaust pipe is not blocked before turning on the vehicle so that carbon monoxide doesn’t enter.

But there are 0 calories and 0 protein in that sauce. I mean really, zero nutritional value. I question if he’d have been in any different condition without the sauce packets.

And that’s why you let people know before you head out and do something like this. Like “hey if you don’t see me in the next 12 hours I’m probably stuck in my car on this trail system. Please call search and rescue”

We are not here to question the merit of hot sauce packets, they saved his life. And a bear kept that 3 year old alive for 4 days in Virginia.

Agreed. You can actually go quite a long time without any food -- but maybe it helped reduce his panic with the mere act of eating.

FIRE sauce? Oof.

Reminds me of this one time I went to a Pistons game with some friends. They scored over 90 points, which meant that free taco coupons were handed out into the crowd. So on the way home, we all stopped by Taco Bell to cash in.

We were all too cheap to get anything but our free tacos, so we just hit the drive-thru real quick. When asked if anyone wanted sauce, we all looked at each other like “nah” “not me”... except for me. “What kind?” “Uh, fire I guess.” So the four of us get our free tacos, and I wound up with four packets of fire sauce.

To my great regret, I dumped them all on my one taco. Needless to say, it was a long ride home. The stuff actually burned a layer from the roof of my mouth. I remember picking the loose pieces of (what do you call it, skin? flesh?) out of my mouth and tucking them in the wrapper to dispose of . Gross.

Why is it people get lost/stuck in the NW like this? I’m thinking Kim family and Rita Chretie n stories.

https://www.nrtoday.com/ten-years-ago-kim-family-endured-wilderness-tragedy/article_fb3a1215-29ee-5243-aa96-94d6d568d7d7.html

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/british-columbia/seven-weeks-in-wilderness-rita-chretien-recalls-her-nightmare/article556079/

Underestimating condition? Side roads? Poor mapping/ road layers? Not being prepared? Poor cell coverage?

AestheticsInMotion I’m looking in your direction..

I got a work Jeep Cherokee stuck in snow in Southern Califorina, but I was 23 years old and a bit naive about the capabilities of a Jeep with balding tires.

I firmly believe that if dogs could convey their wishes, they would happily give themselves up for their masters. Er, owners...wait, is it “parents” now? I can’t keep up with all the pet PC stuff.

I would eat my cat on Day 2. Because by Day 3, he would eat me.

well.. it takes about 30 days to properly starve

sooo maybe the liquidness of the sauce helped him with his water requirements?

(i dont think it did)

Just remember not to eat the dog  livers. That’s what killed Mertz and nearly killed Mawson.

Usually all of your ideas play a role. You wouldn't believe the number of times I've seen Corollas, etc. taking forest service roads that are half washed out so they can go hike some cool trail in their boat shoes with no water or food. The pull of the PNW lifestyle is strong, and pulls a lot of people way outside of their elements. It all seems so safe and easy because so many people go to these trails all the time. But they're not all easy to get to, and wilderness here is no joke. Search and rescue teams get called in all the time.

Probably plays a part that you can get from the beach to the mountains in minutes. Here in BC SAR is out on the coast multiple times every weekend - pulling cold hikers and snowshoers out at 2am in the morning. The rest of the province you don’t hear much.
