$13,500 buy it now? That is HIGH-LARIOUS.

I really like the Pacer design. very futuristic (maybe retro-futuristic at this point) with that glass and curves. I know some consider it ugly, but I put it on a list I did of the 10 best looking American cars ever made. I’d imagine it’s pretty terrible to drive though, the ‘70s were not a good time for cars.

Nothing wrong with asking for the moon on a buy it now. I do wonder what the reserve is though.

5300 and reserve not met? Hah! 3k cash, final offer

No, that’s FMV for a car that is damn near concours.

Reasonable Response: “get fucked, asshole. This ain’t CL and it ain’t a Honda.”
$3k won’t touch anything in restorable condition.
Pacers are not cheap.

Well, it was specifically designed to replicate the feel of a full-size landyacht, so expect soft suspension and light steering.

TIL Pacers carry a premium.
Does the same go for Gremlins?
(I secretly long for a Gremlin)

This isn’t just a Pacer; it’s a Pacer D/L. So double-premium.
As to Gremlin... o h GODS yes.
A 1976 AMC Gremlin X in Hagerty #3 will set you back at least $6.5k - that’s restorable condition. A Concours with Levi’s will EASILY go $20k.

I don't care what Haggerty says. It's a freaking Pacer. I like it, really I do, but that is an $8k car, tops.

Ok I want a Gremlin but I dont think I want one $ 20k bad.

The market does not give a shit about you or your opinion. If you don’t like it, don’t buy it. Otherwise, your opinion has absolutely zero bearing on the valuation. Hagerty sets prices by what they are actually selling for .

How many concours quality Pacers do you think have changed hands in the last few years? That data has got to be noisier than a deal that metal concert.

To be fair, this is what a $18-20 k Gremlin looks like:
Absolute perfection down to every last screw, 100% correct Levi’s interior, absolutely no modifications, AMC 258 I6, factory A/C, correct paint on everything, and every single label is present and correct .
And here’s what a $25 ,000+ Gremlin looks like. And no, I am not joking.
This is the Randall 401XR, #22, built in 2014, from a chassis that was laying around and a 401 pulled from an Ambassador I think it was . This is the lowest of the low end of 401XR’s. Not a “real” one, too much late-model aftermarket, iffy color, etc.
Nobody knows how high exactly a real 401XR would sell for, because nobody’s been willing to sell public . Any changing of hands has been private with no price disclosed. The low-side at auction for a real one however, is said to be at least $100,000 in good or excellent condition.

I wouldn’t say this one is ne ar C onco urs though. Looks like denting on the fender and doors, and the paint looks pretty spent. I mean, I don’t think it’s a lost cause, but I do think you have to put a lot of cash in to get it to that point. That said, for non-commodity goods, the buy-it-now price is supposed to be high, you are paying to make sure you don’t get outbid, so obviously there should be a premium .

Uh, far more than your hate for them is willing to admit.
BaT’s sold several above $15 k, Hemmings has 3 listed right now including a restomod Wagon, Sotheby’s sold a modified ‘76 at $11k, Barrett-Jackson sold a ‘75 survivor at $15k, and so on.
![]() 03/03/2019 at 13:04 |

It’s classified as near-concours because it’s an all original survivor. Those are going to price in-line with concours or above because of the ‘how it came from the factory’ cachet and the history . That’s just how it works with classics. Don’t ask me, people are stupid like that.
And as survivors go, this one is pretty much at the top of the heap. Battery and radiator cap are ‘gimmes ’ for an operable example. The engine paint is not just original and correct but pristine. No oil staining visible at all. The exterior dings don’t detract ; continuously operated survivors are expected to have dings like this. It’s a red flag to not have any because that generally points to a restoration or repaint (meaning it’s no longer a survivor.)

What part of, “I like it, I really do,” makes you think I hate it? I dig this thing, I just don’t think it’s worth anywhere close to $13.5k. You disagree, fine. Not sure why you seem so upset about a disagreement about the v alue of a car nei ther one of us is going to buy.

huh?
$100k for a Gremlin?
