I found out today that one of my favorite bosses, who always happily provided references and helped me get positions is retiring. Add to that that nearly every university professor I’ve ever had, including my mentor, have retired, and I’m basically at the point career-wise where I don’t get to call in favors from people much higher up the food chain than I am. I’m pretty sure this is how Ripley felt when they took her out of hypersleep and she had to go get certified to use that loader thing.

Now you get to take their place.
Speaking of which, if you could put in a good word for me....

At least you don’t have to face Weiland Yutani’s version of ‘retirement’ where you go investigate a strange alien space craft and they send you out with half the fuel you need because they know your ass ain’t coming back.

I’m going to retire in one year, eight months, and sixteen days. I intend to celebrate by taking my alarm clock, which is set to 5:12 AM (arrgh)
on weekdays,
out in the back yard and pounding it to dust with a sledge hammer. At that point I will not be thinking “getting old sucks,” far from it!

I feel you. I have literally nobody left in the workforce who is older than me, and who I’ve known for more than a couple years. Actually just one guy, but predictably he’s on the chopping block at his job and asking me for help
You really feel alone, professionally...
