These are all over Detroit, even in the road sometimes. Keeps steam from blocking your vision.

Sewer pipe steam vent? I have so many questions.

When did they start doing this? Long enough to wind up on street view, I guess.

If it just popped up, it’s probably ventilation for workers in the sewer below.
I saw 2 of these yesterday, about a half block apart, with trucks next to them and signs about proper ventilation.

If I had to guess, post bankruptcy. A few years at least. There were times when you could not see through the steam, I’m happy they are up now.

Interesting. This is my first time working near that window, so I don’t know how long it’s been there.

Proof the earth is flat. Smoke rising up from the steam engines on the 10th sublevel propelling the earth upward at 9 m/s to simulate gravity.

Huh. Well, t o be fair, I haven’t been on Mack in a long time. So I guess only certain streets are getting this treatment then . Or maybe I just wasn’t driving through at the right time of year to see them .

I actually used street view’s history thing and its not there in 2015, so not that long.

You and me both. We’ve got sewage systems going back centuries and I’ve never seen steam coming from them, no matter how cold it gets.
I understand the ones in New York are steam vents from community central heating pipes.

Not a great place to put a stack, granted it’s where the vent is but there’s not much warning (ie cones or barriers) for the drivers who may come upon it, certainly at night.

I’ve seen it before on cold nights (sub zero F.) and when the weather shifts unpredictably. But Apparently it’s really crappy in Detroit area so there’s lots of steamers.
