Appears to be a “commercial” officer’s sword. I think a type 95? NCO. Blade looks ok with a strong hamon. I can’t read japanese anymore :( otherwise I could tell you when and who made it. I am much much much better at firearms.

I can tell you it is better at slicey than pokey, but will do both

That’s a sword.
It is missing the bit you hold.

Your stabby is missing its grippy from its tang-itty thing.

The pointy end goes into the other man.

We have a very similar one at home in fair/good condition. Apparently it’s a Japanese officer’s sword, which were cut down by about 6" for easier portability (vs Samurai swords, which are really long). Pretty common on this side of the Big Pond, most of them were collected on battlefields or abandoned bunkers in the Pacific.
We don’t display it because reasons. Battlefield artifacts (in private hands) are a touchy subject for me, not too
much like Confederate memorials.

Hey I got one of those. My Dad brought it back from WW2. Yeah I’m old and they had me late. Your scabbard is in better shape but mine has a handle. Are the letters on the handle? I’m curious about that. I took it to a vintage firearms show in the early 90s. Nobody would appraise it but I did get a offer of 300. I said no.

It’s a line from the movie Kill Bill.

I can tell you that it looks cool!
That’s about it lol

yea, somewhere I have a giant Nazi flag. I don’ t display that for obvious reasons, not that I would want to anyway. I don’ t think just having one is a problem, having a shrine for it would be differe nt.

yea the letter s are whee the grip would have covered. damn, i wish i had the handle.

Yeah, my dad has a Walther P38 with a swastika on it (the real thing). We take it to the range from time to time, but it’s subtle. And that’s much easier to explain than hanging a Nazi flag in your house.
We’ve thought about donating the sword to a museum or something, but instead it just sits in a closet doing nothing. Both of my grandfathers were Pacific vets and I hate to think that any of their stuff might be “
proudly displayed”
in a Japanese home after it was stolen. Technically government property, but still.

When I get home I'll take some pics of mine. Doesn't look hard to copy.

US soldiers took quite a lot of these as souvenirs. S
o I guess some relative of your wife might
have served in the Pacific.
I have somewhere a Soviet pocket watch that is clearly a war trophy that either my grandfather or his brother took from a Soviet officer. Neither of them did reveal the backstory behind it. As a further evidence there’s a White Guard (voluntary military opposing red/socialist/communist side) shooting competition prize attached to the watch chain. The message seems very clear to me.

I asked my wife and she said "The Japanese is a date - February of the 22nd (?) year of some era I can’t figure out yet"

thats cool. i thought the chances of getting a translation would be pretty low.

The Japanese do there dates weird too. Like her birthday year is not her Western year it’s who was emperor when she was born:

We’ve got a couple of those in the archives at work. The J apanese still issued swords to NCOs and officers through WWII, and they were common souvenirs to take home.

Ive got a dress sword and a rifle too. Not to mention pieces of a Maxim machine gun.
My Dad worked in the post office during occupation so he sent tons of stuff back not all of it made it tho.

My grandfather had a German Infantry hatchet from WWII. It wasn’t worth much according to Ebay so I cut it down and made it into a bookend. Because fuck the Nazis.

thats interesting, so two people could be the same age but from two different eras
![]() 03/01/2019 at 10:40 |

My grandparents were over there during the occupation (grandfather was a career Army ordinance officer). If they brought back any neat stuff like that, it ended up with my Dad’s other brothers. We only ended up with a variety of dolls, figurines and silk paintings my Grandmother brought back.

I've given a lot of stuff to my nieces and nephews but the 2 swords rifle and Phillipino knife I have are kinda hard to let go.

Possibly? I dunno. Also more stuff from my wife on the sword, “Ok. So if that metal thingy says for the year, it’s Showa 22, which is 1947 or it could be Showa 20 with just bad handwriting.. which would be 1945"
![]() 03/01/2019 at 12:03 |

More info "the second picture either says something about help/assistance or the name Yuusuke" she thinks it's the name based on that I mentioned it's likely a WW2 era sword.

If it is a type 95 (Koki 2595) it makes a lot of sense if was Showa 20 or maybe Showa 22
as stated by Duck Duck Grey Duck.

My grandfather brought back a duffle bag of ma users and a luger. Arriving in New York, word got out that MPs were searching bags, (turns out they were making sure GI weren’t stealing silverware) so he went up and threw the bag over the side. So somewhere in New york harbor there is a bag of 98ks
