Food Lion is a not-particularly-fancy grocery store in the southeast and mid-Atlantic. Here in the DC area, it’s a half step below stuff like Giant and Safeway. There’s one in the same strip mall as my gym, it’s open til 11 pm, and it’s fine enough for late night post-workout shopping. I love their generic soda names.

Limon Up - 7Up
Dr. Perky - Dr. Pepper
Omazing Orange - Orange soda
Mountain Lion - Mountain Dew
Rip Roarin’ Fruit Punch - Hawaiian Punch
Ragin’ Grape - Grape

Back in the day when I went to a summer camp up in a rural part of Maryland, there was a Food Lion in town, and at the end of each session we’d have a massive pizza party and loads of Dr. Perky, Limon Up, and Mountain Lion. It was fantastic.

Apparently I’m not the only one with an appreciation for Food Lion’s generic soda names, because back in 2014 they had a !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! that resulted in the Omazing Orange, Ragin’ Grape, and Rip Roarin’ Fruit Punch names.

Supposedly Food Lion also chose Roar! Root Beer as a winner of that contest, but at least at my store, the root beer is just labeled Root Beer. Sorry, Kathleen Spangler of Virginia Beach, VA, for Food Lion disco ntinuing your generic soda name. If it’s any consolation, I would totally buy some Diet Roar! Root Beer if I could.

Food Lion used to be my mother’s preferred grocery here in western NC until the one in our town closed, but that’s been... probably 20 years ago. I think they were trying to expand into the space of the adjacent Hardees that had closed to upgrade to having a deli, etc., but couldn’t come to an equitable deal with the real estate group and ended up just closing up shop. The site is now a Tractor Supply.

I remember the generic soda names, though.

Food Lion has had a ubiquitous presence around Richmond my whole life. They tried a couple of different store concepts last decade, with an upmarket store called Bloom and an Aldi clone called Bottom Dollar Food. Neither of them exist anymore.

This particular Food Lion is a little nicer than the typical Food Lion because it started out as a Bloom, which was Food Lion’s attempt at a more upscale store. W hen they folded Bloom this location got turned into a regular Food Lion, but the produce and deli area is still from when it was a Bloom.

Before any of that , it was a Circuit City.

I never paid much attention, but you make a valid point. Food Lion here has made a concerted effort to jazz up their stores. Where I’m from in central NC, they were always the poor mans grocer. But in coastal SC, some of the stores are reasonably nice and recently remodeled. Since Lowe’s moved upmarket, I think FL had the opportunity to make some stores do the same and occupy what Lowe’s used to be in terms of target market. But some of their stores are still sketch.

For those unfamiliar, Lowe’s is a grocery chain from central NC. It is credited with being founded by the same family as Lowe’s home improvement .

This location started out as a Bloom, actually.

I think by and large, ours failed to modernize. Although, given that the relatively new Bi-Lo has also caved within the past ten years, it may just be that the kind of Publix-ey more-upscale-than-usual Ingles has just kicked everyone else’s ass. Which would make a kind of sense, given that the regional headquarters is nearby, so it kind of has to be a showcase store.

Here in DC, by price, it’s roughly...

Whole Foods

Harris Teeter/ MOM’s Organic/Roots Market

Giant/Safeway/Trader Joe’s

Food Lion

Aldi

Except there’s a nice brand new Aldi that’s right by my house and Aldi has some good shit for super cheap prices. They have great fruit and cooking oil, among other things.

I basically never go to Whole Foods or Harris Teeter, which is overpriced and not really any better than a nice Giant as far as selection/quality but the stores themselves are nice and they have a lot of prepared food I don’t buy anyway.

My rotation is a mix of MOM’s, the Giant by me that has an expanded hippie/organic section, Trader Joe’s, Food Lion, and Aldi. There’s certain stuff at each of them that I can either only get there, or they have the best price on.

For us, Giant & Safeway are the Publix equivalent. The stores are of varying quality but the Giant close to me has a nice big organic/hippie food section that I like. Harris Teeter is a step up in price, and on average it has a wider selection of hippie foods, but the quality/selection isn’t really any better than that particular Giant, so I rarely  shop there . You’re basically paying extra for a fancier looking store and a bigger prepared food section.

Harris Teeter is still around for you? I understand Kroger bought them up and all of the ones around me have turned in to Kroger stores.

I never went in either a Bloom or a Bottom Dollar when they were around. The one Bloom I can remember the location of had reverted to being  Food Lion by the time I was able to go there. I’m oddly fascinated by retail changes like that.

Bi-Lo’s gimmick for a while was that they claimed to have the best meats, but since the Ingles has every lunatic thing I want when I want to cook something odd, from lamb to “picnic” cut pork to beef kidney, I can’t think they really held onto an edge there. The Ingles also has good selection of fancy noodles, organics, and a massive “ethnic foods” type section for curry and other ingredients, as well as a very comprehensive cheeses section and quite decent fresh baked goods. Also, they have good beer.

There isn’t a Trader Joes within a very short drive, but anything totally lunatic in that nature that isn’t at the Ingles could probably be found at the local surplus-and-crazy-foods market.

If I were to guess, I think Kroger wants to keep the Harris Teeter stores in the DC area because they’re upmarket from the mainstream Giant and Safeway.

One nice thing about being in a super busy and extremely diverse area, is within 3 miles or so of my house I have:

Whole Foods
MOM’s Organic
Dawson’s Market (a one-off local fancy place)
2 Harris Teeters
Trader Joe’s
3 Giants
Safeway
Food Lion
Aldi
Shopper’s Food Warehouse

Then for Asian supermarkets we have Great Wall, Lotte Plaza, Korean Korner, and New York Mart. There’s a Patel Brothers Indian supermarket, Megamart Latino supermarket, and a few other smaller Mexican mini grocery stores. There’s other various’ nationalities with little grocery stores as well.

Is there really a point in classifying one store as “fancier” than another? I am going to buy the same stuff regardless of which store I go to. Might as well go to the cheapest possible one. Unless distance is a factor, then I am negating any savings by having to drive further. Loved food lion when I spent some time living in Virginia. Missing actual cheap groceries now in LA! I still have Walmart I guess but I am not stooping to that level...

Ralph’s (Kroger) is my only normal option. Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, and Gelson’s are my nearest stores but they charge astronomically for everything. Von’s and Albertson’s are cheaper generally but I dont have any super nearby. I gravely miss Shoprite and Stop n Shop from back East. But I would love a Food Lion as well!

They’re around, but definitely declined . There used to be two somewhat close to me, one of which is still Harris Teeter, the other was sold to a local independent grocer (Hocker’s) a couple years after it opened and is doing well under their ownership.

And, for everything other than the cola, and maybe Dr. Perky, I fell like you could swap them for the name brand and I wouldn’t know the difference.
