But our adventure is over now.
The doctors gave us days, maybe weeks. She rallied with some meds, and gave us wonderful days on Friday and Saturday that we’ll always remember. But she stopped eating, and it was time. She could have lasted a few more days, but would have felt worse each one of them. She was just doing it for us. We needed to end it for her.
We’ve never lived in this house without her. She’d have been ten in May. Right now, we’re still noticing how empty it is, and how much it hurts without her. She cared for our two kids like they were her own. She was once attacked and bitten by another dog, and did nothing to defend herself. But a dog once ran barking at our stroller, and she had to be separated from it. Too sweet and gentle to defend herself, but would do anything for us. We’ll miss her more than words can say.

Sorry for your loss. Take some time to write down all the good memories and gather all of your favorite photos. A little scrapbook of your favorite moments will help ease the pain.

I am so sorry for your loss. It's wonderful that you had a few more good days with her, but you did the right thing. If she wasn't eating anymore, that was her way of telling you that it's time.

That's probably a good idea. We looked through the pictures on our phones last night. It got easier as we went through

We know. It was so stressful in that she was the sort of dog that refused to show pain, but we were supposed to just know when she was too uncomfortable

We made a bucket list, and she did all and more. We were lucky

Dogs can be stoic like that. They just put up with pain as long as they can without showing it, until one day they hit their limit and and they’re just done.
Let yourself be sad. Don't try to push that sadness down and ignore it. Give yourself a chance to really mourn her, and you'll be glad that you did. Take a day or two off if you can.

I’m sad to hear this, and you all have my deepest condolences. Our furry family members really bring out the best in us and they ask for so little in return.

That’s part of the grief. How do you know you did enough for a dog that never asked for a damn thing, and was just happy to be part of the pack?

So sorry to hear, doggos are the best.
We just had the same thing happen. It will be a long time before we stop listening for her collar jingle or paws on the floor.
Kids are amazing, they will surprise you how much they are processing. Our little girl took a shoe box yesterday, lined it with her favourite blankets, out a little pillow in, then tucked her little chocolate lab stuffie in it. She put it in the corner of her room so she can keep Bella close.
Mom and Dad ended up in tears after that.
We told the kids in some time we would make frames pics of them and her for each of their rooms. It’s a little too sensitive right now- but another month and they’ll be ready.
Hugs to you and your family.

Walgreens offers inexpensive small photo books; when my pup passed away last year, I assembled my favorite photos of her and printed a few copies to hand out to the vet and kennels I regularly used.
And of course a copy for myself.
Best wishes to your family, and I hope you’re fortunate enough to find another amazing dog like her someday.

That’s really good idea. She had two knew surgeries and physical therapy. I bet they'd appreciate that

The framed pic for the kids room is a great idea. They're 3 and 5, and will definitely have issues with this soon.

We didn’t hide anything from our kids. We sat down with them after getting home without her and explained that she had gotten really sick and it was time. It was a rough few days for sure- but they knew what had happened and weren’t waiting for her to come home.

She went to the hospital Sunday for vomiting, came home Monday with an untreatable diagnosis. We told them then. Had to, since we were a mess.

Same, we took her in on a Thurs with a bit of a limp, she was gone Saturday.
It’s hard when it’s so fast, and we were in the same situation. A ton of drugs should’ve kept her going but you lost her personality, and after a day on the doses her liver and kidneys were not working.
In some ways fast was best. She was still herself, still cuddled with the kids, still running to the front door when my Wife’s Subaru turned into the driveway.
Take it easy Cash, it very slowly gets a bit easier.
I tell my family we hurt so much because of how big of a part of our family she was. And how much she loved us and gave to us.

I’m so sad to hear this. Pets are the greatest and losing them is so hard. My condolences to you and the rest of your pack. It’s gonna be a tough next few weeks and months. I hope you all find support in each other.

If you need a tear jerker, read Art of Racing in the Rain. Your dog is on the cover.

I’ve never had a dog but I am fairly good at racing in the rain. I liked the book for both. It’s about things people love.
Buy it on Amazon and throw it on the shelf for when it is time to remember your friend . It is a joy to read.

Ironically I saw my copy while looking for my Alfa 105 manual before seeing your post earlier tonight.
Ps, on a more practical side, buy yourself a Dremel variable speed and a cutoff wheel set. You will use it.

Ps, if you get the D remel, just don’t cut yourself with it. It’s the closest thing I can imagine to a personal light saber.....
