Hey all, coming to LA next week with my family. Mostly doing kiddo things but set aside a day to “drive around”. We are staying close to Anaheim. I’m thinking for our cruising day we want to drive south towards Laguna Beach and down the coast a ways from there. I see some “canyon” roads on the map, is that what you all talk about when “driving the canyons”?
What makes for some interesting driving and sightseeing that includes some coastal views? Theoretically we rented a Camaro convertible, but who knows what we’ll actually get. And I have no idea how we will fit our luggage in the car lol. Kid friendly stops are welcome, but kid friendly like ice cream and a cool statue, not rides and stuff... I see on google maps a “pirate tower” - is that a thing to stop and explore or just some gimmicky tourist trap?
editing to add - is “top of the world” really a thing, and is it decent to spend time at or just another touristy trappy thing?

JBH threw together a route for me when I went up, it was awesome. Start point was where I was staying but the rest is pure gold.

Ok that’s awesome, thanks! It won’t display that route for me until I knock a few stops out of it, but with all those points I can rebuild the route anyway. So are some of the hills snow-covered or do they not get that high? Looks like some of the higher mountains might have closed roads right now, maybe something seasonal?
Edit, something seems to be up with routing on mulholland hwy. Are parts of it closed or some kind of issue there?

idk nothing was snowy when I went there in march a year ago

The route works fine if I bump mulholland hwy off it. Something seems to be preventing from routing that way but I’ll figure that part out I guess. Looks like that might be one of the better canyon drives in the area?

Not sure. Could be that Mulholland is closed due to fire damage IDK

Yeah I think so - I just remembered I have a facebook friend who lives near Malibu Lake and has mentioned mudslides and such after the recent rainstorm, so things could just be a total mess up there. At any rate, thanks for the route!

I don’t think it ever snows there, might be fire damage though?

Been digging a little, I think fire damage might be responsible, because the recent rain caused some small mudslides in nearby places. Maybe I’ll look for a different canyon to drive! ;)

For me switching to public tr ansit view and then back to car made it load. Not surprisingly it didn’t find transit instructions...

Mulholland and Decker/23 are both closed right now from the fires.
I recommend meandering up the 1 past Malibu and stopping at Neptunes Net for lunch/dinner. If you like seafood that is. And continue into Oxnard/Camarillo and then just take the 101 back to experience are shit traffic.
Or you could turn around once you get to Pt Mugu and drive back down the coast.

There
are
a
bunch
of
canyon
roads,
generally
running
from
101
to
the
ocean,
but
it’s
the
ones
that
run
across
those
roads (
ie
Mu
lholland)
that
are
probably
the
most
fun.
I’m
not
local,
though,
have
just
taken
a
lot
of
trips
there.
There
are
a
handful
of
Oppos
who
are
local
who
probably
know
what’s
open.
Have
fun!

Thanks! How about south from laguna beach, is that not as nice as going north? I think based on where we are staying (near Anaheim) it will be easier to do south/east than north. But I’ll go north if it’s better.
Should we just avoid the hollywood area altogether or is it worth a few hours to get sucked into fake celebrity hell? Or is there actually interesting stuff to see there...

North is quieter/prettier. Obviously you’d need to take the whole day, but it’s very nice.
It might be cool to walk up and down Santa Monica Blvd, but other than that I despise people too much. But I have heard about this cool place called Disneyland. A two day park hopper on a week day would plenty to get both parks done and enjoy them.

I am heading to Irvine in a few weeks, so I’m interested in the answer to this as well. Unfortunately it seems like the better roads are up north.

Take Highway 2 (Angels Crest) north to Mt. Wilson and Big Pine, then go skiing at Mountain High.

Disneyland is in the plans, one day there and one day at Universal. Just looking for a place to go on our down day. Thanks!

Ahhh that’s my kind of trip. Unfortunately we are not coming out for the skiing, we have plenty of that back home. Wife would rather see the beach this trip.
I did look at that drive though, it looks fun. Is the route through falling springs closed for winter, or a local issue (fire damage/washout etc)?

I’d recommend against going to the Malibu area for canyon driving right now. The Woolsey fire really did mess up a lot of the roads and with the current rains, the mudslides are making what’s left nearly undriveable. I can definitely recommend some roads to check out alternatively.

So, are you explicitly looking for “hardcore canyon runs” or are you going for a “nice sunday drive”? I have obsessed over learning the canyon roads in the Malibu area so I can definitely make some receommendations for any of that. Unfortunately, the fires and now the rains would make any journey to Malibu to check out any “real roads” ill advised. You 100% have to stick East of Malibu Canyon/Las Virgenes road to begin with because basically everything west of that burned to a crisp. That said, Piuma road and Tuna Canyon road are completely worth checking out if that were your perogative to just go there anyways.
But as a better suggestion, I would definitely say going to the ACH (hwy 2) is your best real option assuming the snow line hadnt come too far down to close it recently. And if you really MUST have ocean views and dont really need hardcore driving, just heading down the PCH towards Laguna and that area would not be a bad idea. I have done that drive with my girlfriend many times and we loved it around there. Lots of car spotting and great views around. You could add in Ortega Highway nearby there (hwy 74 to lake elsinore and back) if you want an actual canyon road to add in (although no ocean views) . Fun road, bit of annoying traffic, but worth your time considering where you are staying.

This bridge that melted is located on Mulholland Highway. Has fubared my commute through at least May and would be exactly what is causing a major impact on that route lol.

I’m not looking for hardcore. I’ll have the family with me and I don’t want to make anyone carsick... but I’d love a fun windy canyon with a worthwhile destination on the other side, so I had a good reason to drive through it ;)
That said, I haven’t been to CA in almost 20 years and then was just passing through. I’ve never spent any amount of time in the LA area, so I don’t know what I’m even really looking for.
Edit - I mean, don’t get me wrong, I’d LOVE to do something hardcore, but I’m not going to blast through it with screeching tires on the curves with my family on board...

You are a good 90 minutes from Angeles Crest Highway if you are staying in Anaheim. Totally worth it if you have the time. A closer and better drive than Mulholland Hwy.

Thanks, that’s looking pretty good. I see ski areas up there, does it have that much vertical? Is there a good place to stop before it turns into snow to do some easy hiking for some good views?
And it looks like there is another way up, through “Fallen Springs” - but that appears to have some kind of blockage on gmaps, is that not passable this time of year or was there recent damage?
Thanks!

I mean if the conditions were right, I’d 100% steer you towards Malibu and tell you to just cruise Mullholland Highway from one end to the other. It is the right balance of ridiculous while also being mild enough to actually enjoy the scenery. But yeah the Woolsey Fire really did burn a lot. But if the rain holds off the day before and the day you end up looking for a drive, definitely could still recommend just taking the PCH from Santa Monica all the way out to the Point Mugu area and back. Mudslides are the only thing to worry about on there and it would 100% be worth the trip visually and is still a fun road from a normal person’s perspective haha. I’d probably just avoid the actual canyons entirely though right now regardless. The ones that are available most certainly can result in a car full of sick people!
Ortega Highway if Malibu is messed up from rain (highly likely) would certainly be my best suggestion. And if you have some extra time, you also have Palos Verdes nearby you. That is another cool area visually, although the roads arent particularly interesting beyond that. Just some cool beach towns around there as well and lots to see on a nice coastal drive without having to go too far.

Awesome, that’s great info. Thanks a lot! And you probably just saved my family from getting sick ;)

This “detour” I took on my commute once would be a perfect example of one of the roads that didnt burn but is so absurdly twisty that even as the driver I am usually at least a little green afterwards:
