This reminds me I got to write up my trip on the Cass Mountain railway. AWD locomotives FTW...
Y
ou should check out an old BBC show called Great Railway Journeys. There was a series in 1980-81, and again in the 90s.

That is really cool, I have done the Durango and Silverton in Colorado, but not the Cumbr e s and Tol tec. Totally agree that the steam locomotive is like a great breathing, moving beast. I visit the historic railways if there is one near when I am on vacation. Wish I had been born ten years earlier so I could have seen the last days of steam engines on US railways growing up.

I volunteer for the Cumbres and Toltec (our organization is called the Friends of the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad: https://www.cumbrestoltec.org/index.php ). We provide the docents on t he trains, as well as restore the historic fright cars and structures on the railroad. Just being on the railroad is a special experience and I love the scenery. Bets of all, for me, is the chance to work on 100+ year old railroad equipment. The Durango and Silverton is a great railroad as well, but the Cumbres and Toltec goes over a 10,000 foot pass!
