... I like it ... uuggh, why do I like it?!
It’s one of the cleanest designs of the current BMW lineup, especially for an M car. The face is not hacked up to bits with creases and scoops - just a nice cadence of 3 intakes below and 2 kidneys above. The headlights aren’t being sucked into the kidneys. The sides are straightforward, with a few horizontal features that are easy for the eye to follow.

You are clearly getting delusional in your old age.

I like the X4 M.
The little “ears” spoiler at the top or the rear window has got to go though. Totally upsets the fastback profile of the vehicle.

It’s the most predictable launch in years. I also love it! The X4... not so much.
That said, as somebody already pointed out in the comments, the GLC63 (no S model for the US), F-Pace SVR, and Velar SVR all have V8s.
This is something I would definitely buy if I had the money. I am still thinking an X3 M40i would be an awesome ‘realistic’ next car for me. I would rather have a 340 wagon but that ain’t happening. Either one is still an extreme stretch of my budget, though. Maybe I should be looking at previous-gen X3s 35i with M-Sport. Those sound awesome from outside somehow. Better than any 335 I’ve paid attention to.

It is also pretty trippy that the X3 now leads the way forward for the 3-series. This is the new M3's engine. What a world.

Oh, that’s interesting. I thought they tuned up the current engine up to 475hp. But this is kind of par for the course for BMW, whose model generations have always been out of sync with their engine generations.

GLC63 for me all the way. That V8 makes filthy noises.

I can't wait for that engine on a proper M3

I think those are different products... the GLC handles great, but I’m willing to bet this S68 will match better with the Macan... which is the segment leader.... because of the weight and distribution of it.
Much like the C63 and the M4, the C was always a dog, and the M was more agile... I feel like the trend will continue here.

How are you defining “segment leader”? AMGs of late have been able to corner and punch above their weight in a straight line. If anything I see Porsche as being overmatched lately. The M5 and E63 can smoke a Panamera turbo, that’s not right. The Macan is also way slower than the GLC and Stelvio (and X3M, I would guess). And it’s only like 100 pounds lighter. Porsches are still lovely, but the price premium is getting harder to stomach.

The new M3 engine revealed before the M3, in a crossover. What a time to be alive.

Personally, the price is too steep and I’d probably have the GLC if I was looking for a vehicle in this segment...
But still, the Macan Turbo is the master of none; The GLC is faster, the Stelvio handles better, and the Velar is more luxurious.
But the Macan has always been the most complete package, plus I don’t want to imagine what Porsche has planned for the facelifted Turbo model!
As for the Panamera... is it fair to compare it to an M5 or an E63? I always thought of Panameras as a lot bigger (and in the TG drag race you’re probably referencing, it says it’s 400kg heavier) Plus... it’s the Sport Turismo.
Again, it’s not the best car in the segment, but it’s probably the best all rounder. It’s the closest to the Tesla in terms of economy it’s more luxurious than the BMW or the Merc, but it’s a but slower.
Edit: About the speed, it depends who you ask, Autocar has the Panamera winning...

It’s far from the ugliest new BMW.
