So there was a movie I wanted to watch and the site said, “Stream for $4.99.” (Not available on DVD.) Turns out $4.99 gets you a 480p stream and if you want it in “HD,” then it’s an extra dollar. Be watchin’ Netflix.

Fuck that! To get an actual DVD rental is only $1 but they charge $5 for something that costs them *less* to provide ? WTF?

This is life with Roku. Every movie I look up says “Buy for $2.99" or whatever the price is. But I know now that it’s going to be more, for HD or 4k or whatever I actually want. Textbook bait and switch, all the same.

Yup. It’s like when Comcast tries to sell you an Xfinity deal, it’s like, Oh, you want to use the HDMI for your television? Then you need our HD package... Um, nope. My parents, nearing 80 years of age, don’t notice or care that that they’re viewing a crappy analog television signal that doesn’t even fit correctly on the screen. It’s like saying, Oh, so you want to use a toilet with a seat on it? That’ll be extra.

Funny example, because we recently replaced our toilets and a seat is not included. Only because they make you choose, soft close or not, and who knows maybe there are other choices. But yeah the toilet doesn’t automatically come with a seat.

Actually the same is true of an outboard motor, usually. They don’t provide a propeller with the engine because it varies by application. Any reasonable sales person should most definitely include it in the price and explain that fact, but still.

Plex server fo life. I still pay for netflix/Hulu and prime but my buddies set up a plex server and its pretty much all we watch these days. I refuse to pay per single stream because of what you brought up but I have occasionally rented a redbox for 2 bucks. Remember when blockbuster tried to battle Redbox? Yeah that didn’t go well.

I hope you opted for the toilet with the removable seat. Best decision I ever made, as far as cleaning it goes.

I can see the prop being a thing. What gets me is buying a motorcycle or a scooter when a significant freight fee is not included in the price.

Netflix got my subscription early in the game and that's where I'm staying. I'll still rent DVDs from Redbox, but this recent thing really turned me off. 720p should be the standard -- or higher -- and offer a discount for a lesser stream if you're on a smaller screen.

Im with ya. Cut cable 10 years ago but dropped Netflix disks for streaming the year they started that service (actually the 1st year or 2 both were included for the same price) . Netflix/Hulu we share with wife’s sister so we each just pay for one. Amazon is just ok but we use a bunch of the prime services so it’s almost like a freebie. Start asking nerdy friends about plex. Bet someone you know runs a server if they give you access you’ll have their whole catalog available in a very user friendly UI for free. Our plex buddy has hundreds of movies and tv shows loaded up so more and more we just end up on the plex over all else but again you do have to have a buddy willing to do all the uploading/ maintaining that comes with that. It's like a hobby for some folks.

Is Plex basically a disk array that someone maintains and make available via VPN or other means? They have to upload the DVDs?

It’s basically a Netflix style app on all devices roku xbox PlayStation pc apple almost all devices are supported. Yes someone has to maintain a server but it doesn’t have to be an array can just be your normal home pc but most people keep a separate pc to act as the server. Every movie available was at some point loaded into the server. Some guys are honest and only load movies they own and others torrent movies and load it to the max . It’s a general media server platform so it doesn’t have to be movies could be music or all types of other files. A great thing about it is you can download anything from it so if your heading to a no data coverage area on a trip you just select a few things and download them but m ostly you just steam things as needed. Some people sell access on craigslist. A couple bucks gets you into thousands of movies and tv shows. We should ask OPPO who plex’s . As friendly as most of us are   might even get an invite. If i were the admin of ours I’d let you in if not just to check it out.
