That’s pretty cool. I suspect we all have intersection stories: they’re dangerous, you’re often stopped and can spend more time looking around, and typically pedestrians play a larger role.

Years before we all had cameras in our pocket, I saw something at an intersection in downtown Indianapolis that seems so unlikely to have been a coincidence that I often wonder whether I’m hallucinating the memory.

Right in front of a government building near the circle, traffic was stopped at an unusual light where pedestrians have sole right of way in all directions. At the head of one lane of traffic was a Continental or similar, painted (maybe) a purple color.

I say “maybe” because my memory tells me it wasn’t actually paint, but something like a velvet covering . I’m much less confident in that: there’s a locally famous van that used to drive around with some sort of astroturf-like covering (and “10¢ to touch me” signage) so I may be conflating the vehicles.

Anyway, t he really weird part of the scene wasn’t the purple car by itself, but that passing directly in front of the car in the crosswalk was a large man wearing a purple suit. Almost exactly the same shade of purple as the car.

Now, it’s possible that this was an arranged event, but there was no indication that the car and the man were together, and I can’t imagine, other than the surreality of it all, what motivation they would have had to plan out that event.

Anyway, I desperately wish I had had a camera, and I wish I had more confidence in my recollection, but I’d swear it happened.
