I really, really liked the Nevada plates on WrongWheelDrive’s rented Miata when we met a while back. I also really like the BC Parks plates. Kinda thinking of getting one for the ST (what do you think?) Anyway, show me the best North America has to offer!

This is the one I want for the ST:

These are others I quite like:

Standard PA plates are boring, but occasionally I see these ones and they look neat:

All of those plates are really nice. Not sure there is much to compete. Unfortunately Ohio’s “Beautiful” plates have been fazed out for bland ones again.

Anyways these are the plates we used to have. I wanted to get a new one to replace mine which has been in 2 car accidents and 3 different cars.

Oregon has a few neat ones,

Kinja'd!!!

I still prefer old style plates though, I have these on both my 68 Camaro and 68 C10, The Camaro has real 68 Plates (no pacific wonderland script) the C10 has the modern reissue with the script. The original Pacific Wonderland plates were roughly 1958/59 through 1964/65

I wish we had retro re-issues. I run Expo 86 plates on my truck, but they are illegal . Usually just drive around the village with them on, obviously with real plates on hand.

Personally, I prefer plain and simple plates, complicated and colorful designs kind of clash with the car, its why manufacturers alter plates to all body color in advertising.

Really though I prefer simpler plates, not a fans of ones that are photos or heavily illustrated.

I was perfectly content with the base TX plate:

Even the standard Massachusetts plate is a bit gaudy for me, the red lettering is a bit too much (also I’m irrationally bothered that there are none that expire in November or December)

Most of the plates that pop up into my head as being cool have been discontinued though.

I had them on my old E36 and swapped them out for the Marl boro  Ohio plates at the first opportunity. I actually used the old ones as target practice.

New Mexico’s chile plates have been (right fully) covered, but don’t discounts NM’s two other standard issue plates you get to choose from:

I’ll always have a soft spot for the classic yellow plate, and I’ve got a chile plate on my truck currently because I’ve never had one before, but the centennial plate is my favorite.

The Mass plate is extremely similar to the plates of Alberta. And I completely agree. The colour scheme stands out, which is good for a plate, but it does look quite ugly.

I think Alberta did a pretty good job with the Oilers and Flames plates. Even if I hate both teams, they’re still pretty handsome from a graphic design perspective. Now we just need a real attempt at updating our regular plates.

Kinja'd!!!

When it comes to the USA, I think Tennessee has some quite handsome and elegant plates.

I like the classic plates in Delaware, preferably the stainless steel versions. Most locals like the porcelain ones but they only say DEL and not Delaware. Makes any car look classy.

Them’s fighting words in this state. I strongly disliked the balloon plate, despite being an ABQ native. The balloon plate drew a lot mixed. I actually like the concept, but out in the world and viewed in daylight it ended up looking more like a pale whitish, pinkish fade with some letters. With more contrast between the colors I think it would’ve worked better.

I don’t disagree on the standard plate, but I have hard time criticizing a plate that is been in more or less continuous use since 1965 with only relatively minor revisions over the years. The basic scheme dates to at least 1929, although NM alternated plates with new colors every year until the 60s. The red on yellow was a standard in the color cycle coming up every few years.

I can see what you mean with the balloon. Simpler is better when it comes to plates.

Colorado is much the same with the mountain horizon background on our plates that go back pretty far. Even on those classic NM plates the symbol is much more pronounced than the current one. A straight up palet te swap with the centennial design would be great.
