Oppo- i have a couple painting projects coming up (fresh paint in the new office built in the basement, coffee table, garage being painted white, painting out the remaining basement ceiling/walls) and have been debating on grabbing a paint sprayer vs doing it all by hand. Was wondering if anyone had recommendations (would like to stay under $150). Also, would any of these work on cars (or even bed liner) or metal painting (i have a desk i would like to paint as well).

I do not. However I am interested to see what people recommend too. Painting our house is on the to-do-eventually list.

I used a Wagner to paint a fence. Cleanup is key. To make sure the next time you use it it actually works, you spend a ton of time cleaning. So, not worth it on small project

I’d rent as needed. That shit is a pain to keep properly clean and functioning for when you need it next...which could be a substantial amount of time.

I learned how to paint interiors as a porter/painter’s helper in an apartment complex. The painter used an airless sprayer that dropped into a 5-gallon bucket. Airless is fantastic for buildings since you can point it in any direction and don’t have to worry about pouring paint out of the gun. T he painter would use a giant paint knife to keep the paint off the trim, but he was good enough to keep the spray off the knife too. That’s an important skill which keeps you from having to clean the knife all the time.

As the helper, I cut in and painted all of the trim work with gloss. I also did all of the kitchen and bathroom cabinets with a brush. The trick there is to not waste time with painter’s tape. L earn to cut it in by hand. Keep a damp rag handy to clean up any mistakes.

As Cash Rewards said, equipment cleanup is key. I inherited a Wagner from my mom. I thought it was going to be great since I had to paint her house before we could sell it. I discovered that it was all clogged up, so I tossed it in the trash. We ended up doing it the old-fashioned way using rollers and brushes.

With all of that said, there must be a reason professional painters don’t use airless sprayers for automotive work. I have no idea what it is.

I’m always conflicted with that. If i know i’m going to use it enough that its cheaper to buy then rent, I typically go with the buy option (which is why i now own a drywall lift). Plus, when i rush things, i typically do a less than satisfactory job or require longer rentals to do it right which adds stress.

then yo u sound like the type that could keep it functioning! I’m only fluent in auto paint...not so much the others when spraying is the application method. I feel like a Wagner is cheap enough to warrant a shot.

Thanks for the tips - I’ve never used one before, but i know its much easier to paint furniture/other things with a sprayer vs not. When i moved into my house my parents (thankfully) came out and helped me paint the entire first floor which we did with brushes and rollers and i dont know if i want to do that again, hahaha.

And I agree for the airless for autos, i just cant find anything on it. My guess would be that auto paint just doesnt work as well?

Maybe it’s the formulation or materials.

I have a graco unit that will feed out of a 5 gal bucket, works great and wasn’t too expensive. As for painting metal, the HF airless sprayer turbine deal works well.  I actually painted a corvette project car with it and it turned out great.  You wouldn’t have known that I didn’t use a compressor and HVLP gun.  And it was sub $100.  But you won’t want to either on the other type surfaces, the different viscosity of the paints will make them non interchangeable.

Any idea what the graco unit was?

And I’ll have to look into the HF model. Usually i dont trust anything from them that has moving parts (i’ve had a few drills and other things burn out).

FYI- i went with a cheap ($ 30) , but extremely well reviewed one off amazon to paint the ~200 square foot office/bath in my basement. If I seem to like how its working/how the paint works , i’ll probably upgrade to one of the ones below.
