As a high school teacher, I presided over publication of the school’s yearbook for five years.
This would never have been printed on my watch.
How did this ever get printed? Why isn’t EVMS being excoriated right now along with Governor Northam?

Democrats don’t get a break do they?
Maybe resigning and giving the Governorship to the Lieutenant would be a bold move.... But it might fall under “See,

What can I say? Virginia’s got issues.
If Northam is smart he’ll just pull a Steve King and hunker down. Trump will do something dumb tomorrow, this will fall out of the news and he’ll survive his term.

It’s almost like whole portions of our society accept racism. Weird.
But remember guys, he was just a twenty five year old kid. He can’t be expected to takenresponsibikity for his actions. As long as he didn’t actually light any crosses on fire, we (other white guys) should forgive him. And if you’re not white, he’s a Democrat which means he’s really on your side (trust us). Don’t forget the Dems gave you a black president once.
Don’t @ me with the “we all did dumb stuff as kids” bs. If you were acting like a kid at twenty five, then you were an asshole, sorry.

Because he remembers another time he wore blackface so vividly, but doesn’t remember the photo, so obviously it never happened? And in any event, he would never put on his blackface that darkly, because it’s too hard to clean off.
Such a strange and weak defense from the “Coonman”

I did a lot of dumb shit when I was younger. But even being 16 years old in 1984. I knew better than to put on blackface then.
Was it more common then? Yep - it was. Was it still just as racist in 1984 as today? Also yep.

People do change, and its probably healthy to let those who have changed for the better do so instead of penalizing them forever for past failures. That doesn’t mean we need to give them the benefit of the doubt, we can judge them on their actions.
If you insist that someone be treated according to their worst behavior, then there will never be an incentive for them to improve. But again, they do actually have to improve themselves, there’s no reason to forgive old offenses just because they are old.

The real shame about the Democratic party is that no matter the scandal, no matter the screw up, the default excuse is “well [insert Republican leader here] did it first, so it’s okay if we do it.” It’s childish, ineffective, pathetic and it cost Clinton the election to the current dipshit. Maybe these people should act like adults, admit mistakes and move forward instead of constantly reminding the American voter that they were the second group to make a big mistake and so that makes it okay.
It’s fucking exhausting. I swear to Christ Northam would have been chased out of town on a rail if he had an R after his name. Since he is a Democrat the game is to pretend his actions at 25 are in some way not relevant. This is the same group of people who (rightly) tried to stop Kavanaugh based on an unsubstantiated claim about an incident that occurred when he was still in high school.
He made a dumb mistake years ago that should preclude him from continuing in his current role as governor.
![]() 02/04/2019 at 10:58 |

Nope. He has overstayed his welcome. Drop him like a hot rock. I don’t care what he hasn’t done in the past 35 years, when he was 25 he dressed in racist clothing and then had the photo included in the medical school y earbook. That’s not the behavior I want from the governor of my state. I voted for this asshole.
Why does everyone want people to be allowed to redeem themselves? He did a dumb fucking thing, it came back and bit him in the ass and now he has to face the consequences. It's not as though he is going to be destitute. This state and this country can do better than this asshole.

Well, people
need
to be able to redeem themselves for our society to be civil. But we also are reasonable to set a higher bar for those who represent us. As I say above, politics is no place for good, honest, courageous talk. And Governor Northam issued too little of any of those at the outset of this and has disqualified himself. Kavanaugh? Maybe, maybe not, but he and his family certainly have paid a price for his bad behavior in high school.
![]() 02/04/2019 at 11:14 |

I believe he should probably resign, and I’m not trying to excuse democrats. I’m just saying that the standards should fair and expected of both parties. I’m enjoying the fact that he ran on a campaign of “Vote for me ‘cuz the other guy is a RACIST!!!11!!1!!!~!!!1!!”
That said, the Ds started the trend of bringing up shit in yearbooks from 30 yrs ago (Kavanaugh, Roy Moore), so it’s equally amusing to see it thrown back in their face . Even better that Northam is standing firm in not resigning, thus creating a yuuuge divide among the Ds.
![]() 02/04/2019 at 11:15 |

It’s both too bad he personally acted like an entitled fuckbag, and it’s too bad that he was considered by the Republican Party to be the most viable choice. I don’t care if the allegations were true (they were) or not. As soon as they were made there should have been a Plan B which would have involved a brief apology and an assurance that the main goal was to get a good person on the bench, not the fuckery that the American public had to endure while an accused rapist was sworn in to the Supreme Court.

By saying “I’m just saying that the standards should be
fair and expected of both parties” you are setting up someone for an excuse. Because if the standards are not upheld against the Republicans than the Dems will say “S
ee? They did it, so we did too.” Maybe these people should act like grown-ups whose actions have consequences. And people (Democrats) should stop falling back on the argument that they aren’t the biggest offender in the room as long as Trump is in office. It may be true, but it isn’t exactly a solid argument. Saying your guy is better because he is “just” an accused racist who has reformed,
does not make him
better than the accused rapist who says the same thing
.

f***bag is an overtly misogynist term .
The American legal system isn’t supposed to operate and draw conclusions on claims that cannot be substantiated. I’ve had this explained repeatedly — and patiently — by a successful defense attorney who is active on Oppo.
Like I’ve said: Brett Kavanaugh’s behavior have brought disgrace upon himself and his family and will mark his entire tenure on the SCOTUS bench, just as did the allegations against Clarence Thomas mark his.
Don’t wanna be no scrub and run for prominent office.

I’m not saying anyone should be excused. I’m saying that the standards need to be uniformly
applied and raised
or else you end up with a fucking lunatic in office because one side is willing to let a personal flaw pass because the candidate otherwise has the same politics as them
. Democrats and Republicans should be outraged about Northam, but then again, Democrats and Republicans should be a lot more outraged about many more politicians too.

I thought a fuckbag was a used condom, not an “overtly misogynist term.” Not every term is anti-woman.
The American legal system is a joke. Caring about the views of those who exploit it for their gain
would be a real exercise in time wasting.
We all know how it works. If you are white and well-to-do, have at it. If not, buckle up, it’s going to be a bumpy ride.
I wish Kavanaugh could have just kept his disgrace as a family thing instead of subjecting the rest of the nation to his actions.

Just did a little reading (never saw the movie) . Interesting comment from the lead actor - “ I’m shocked at how truly harmless that movie is, and how the anti-racial message involved in it is so prevalent... This isn’t a movie about blackface. This isn’t a movie that should be considered irresponsible on any level... It’s very funny... It made me much more aware of the issues we face on a day-to-day basis, and it made me much more sensitive to racism... It’s an innocent movie, it’s got innocent messages, and it’s got some very, very deep messages. And I think the people that haven’t seen it that judge it are horribly wrong. I think that’s more offensive than anything. Judging something you haven’t seen is the worst thing you can really do. In fact, Soul Man sort of represents that all the way through. I think it’s a really innocent movie with a very powerful message, and it’s an important part of my life. I’m proud of the performance, and I’m proud of the people that were in it. A lot of people ask me today, “Could that movie be made today?”... Robert Downey Jr. just did it in Tropic Thunder!... The difference is that he was just playing a character in Tropic Thunder, and there was no magnifying glass on racism, which is so prevalent in our country. I guess that’s what makes people more uncomfortable about Soul Man. But I think it’s an important movie.”
Fun fact - the co-stars got married after the movie.

I’m just waiting for future politicians to get shitcanned for that stupid tend in my demographic of guys dressing up as female cheerleaders for halloween and other events.
I mean, even then I thought the people doing it were stupid... but kids are stupid. Was what he did racists? Y es. Should he have known better? Yes. Is he being a total ass about it? Yes. Is he racists and pursuing racist policies? This is really the important question isn’t it. Because if the answer is no that this whole thing represents a serious and dangerous trend we HAVE to avoid .
With exception of people who’ve committed serious crime, p eople need to be judged on who they are, not who they were. I’ m not who I was 15 years ago, and I think being judged on my current character as that person 15 years ago would be wrong.
Is he racist? I guess it depends on if he does racists things isn’t it, not did. A person can absolutely change.
Now I do think he’s an idiot for doing it and totally clueless about how to approach an apology for it if he is truly a different person...its not showing a real change of heart...but he needs to be judged on his actions today.
I think he should be criticised for it, he needs the sharp reproval it seems, but a call to resign? This has got to stop.
TLDR: W e can’t allow the trial of public opinion to condemn a person based on who they were. Who they were can and should inform public perception of who they might be, but who they might be is NOT who they chose to be.

In other words, redemption needs to be a thing. I agree wholeheartedly. And wouldn’t you expect me to?
But there are a couple of problems. Governor Northam has picked a career field for himself where honest, courageous conversations simply cannot be had. I mean, he could have tried that approach, but he did not.
I keep saying in this space that Justice Kavanaugh got his appointment, but his past behavior and choices exacted a terrible price upon his reputation and upon his family. People in positions such as that need to look long and hard at their past and think about the cost of those things coming out. When you submit your name for POTUS or SCOTUS or governor, you invite that inspection and that trial of public opinion because politics.
And the Covington story? Wouldn’t have happened if those kids hadn’t decided to display MAGA hats that morning. Were they
wrong
to wear those hats? No. Do they
regret

We keep expecting perfect candidates when there are none. There are no perfect human beings. How one of the most imperfect humans ever got elected POTUS is...well, I was going with “mind boggling,” but nothing boggles the mind when nothing is normal any more. I would wager that Kavanaugh and Northam never thought about those events in their past because they were long forgotten. Forgotten because those actions were acceptable back then. It’s hard to know that you are doing anything wrong when nobody tells you it’s wrong, or when everybody around you (in your sheltered, privileged existence) are doing the same thing.

As far as we know, Bret Kavanaugh did not go on to live a life of debauchery, and Ralph Northam went on to a successful career in medicine and a decidedly liberal voting record in VA government . They were probably hoping that these things wouldn’t find the light of day. Before the Internet, that was possible. But no more.

Perhaps it is. But there are more colorful and less vulgar word choices.
I wish Kavanaugh could have just kept his disgrace as a family thing instead of subjecting the rest of the nation to his actions.
On the one hand, I’d say he attempted to do just that. On the other hand, he may have sort of blotted his privileged
, advantaged youth from his mind. Either way, I wish he’d made other choices as a young man and or chosen a different line of work.

Northam would have been fine if he’d just retired as a wealthy doctor.
Look at Al Franken. The picture I saw of him with the sleeping colleague in the armored vest didn’t strike me as all that bad. But he hit the road. If you ask me, Franken set the bar with his move.

I get a Christmas card from him every year. Haven’t spoken to him in ages.
