Missed My Run Goal :/

From 1984 until 2017, I ran less than 20 miles. In 2018 I ran 501 miles. I aimed to run 600 this year and was way ahead of schedule. Then I had a bad time for a while and got lazy. I have been on track to make it up, but my right knee has been bothering me to the point where I know I need to not run and strengthen other areas of my leg/knee for a while. Running is such a numbers game for me . I’m addicted to it, but I hate it, but I like the feeling afterward. N othing is better than punching that number into my spread sheet and watching all of the data that I am tracking change.

Kinja'd!!!

Anyway I’m not planning on running today, so the total for 2018 comes to 586.23 miles. Who knows though, the days I say I’m not running are often the days I put down 7-10 miles.

I know that kind of mileage isn’t very impressive, but it is big time for me. One sad fact is that I have run more miles than I have driven the M3 this year, a lot more.

My favorite part of 2019 (outside of the time spent with my little girl) was taking delivery of the 02 and driving it everywhere.

In 2020 I wish for good health and happiness for my friends, family, and oppos. I’m hoping for nice weather, a new mountain bike, and my P car ( I’m trying not to get my hopes up   although I don’t think this is the year)

7-10 miles is impressive to me. I used love running bit like.... 1 mile. Maybe 2 miles when i was feeling spunky. I wouldn’t run now mainly because my doctor and others recommend against it do to the impact nature of it. Instead I’ve taken up cycling. Might be something to look into if you get to the point you don’t feel you can do the running. Also, it is possible to get a runner high type feel while bicycling, not quite the same but you get in a zone at some point and can just go and go, faster and further. I just got into it last year so im  working on my distance still because im still at rookie numbers.

I sold my roadie for a mountain bike two “seasons” ago. I’ll also go to spin with my wife every once in a while (particularly times when my knees are grumpy), but you’re right it’s not the same. Even with running, I have to go so damn far to get the real buzz now. When It’s nice out I can run forever but I can’t do more than an hour on the treadmill, it is so bleeding boring.

Surfing is really the only thing that meets/beats the runners high for me . I love mountain biking, but it does not quite get me there unless it’s uphill city and who the fuck want’s to do that? I’m in it for the jumps, fast turns, and nature!

I take it you’re road cycling? How far do you ride?

I’ve “traveled” 664.42 miles this year. I use Nike Run to track my distances, but I have all the walks with my dog interspersed in there so its not nearly that distance for actual running. Nice work, 580 miles is no joke  especially with knee pain

During the summer I was riding 22 miles every thee times a week on the bike path near work . Those are amateur numbers compared to everyone else I know in cycling but im working up to more . I can do 30-ish miles comfortably right now but would like to be able to do more. Of course its so extremely hilly around here so that mileage varies considerably once you start doing actual road riding, depending on where you ride. I did a group ride in the summer and we did a 14 mile circuit on some back roads with 2 or 3 of the big hill climbs and I was wasted by the end lol. One of the big things to extend my range is this coming year is that  im going to get clips. That will be much, much more efficient. Also I discovered the need for riding shorts on extended rides .

Running is such a strange concept to me. Its funny though because I will happily spend 8+ hours skiing only difficult trails with just a short lunch break usually taking place on the ski lift. And I can also spend 12+ hours hiking dozens of miles while carrying gear. But ask me to run a mile or two and theres no damn way I’d do it without some serious motivation lol. I also have no trouble playing soccer or ultimate frisbee for hours as well so its not running in particular that is the problem. I guess just running for the sake of running seems boring for me. And if I have to do it on pavement, forget about it my knees will feel horrible after the first mile.

People go NUTS with cycling. A guy I work with pops up on my Strava all the time like “Bill just posted a 70 mile ride.” Next day, “Bill just posted a 134 mile ride”. JFC dude!

I only ever rode solo and 20 -30 miles was about it paths/street combo. It is amazing how much ground you can cover particularly on a road bike. The leg burn on the hill climbs is SO serious. I can’t believe those tour de France dudes do it for hundreds of miles at a time.

Even on a mountain bike you get relief from a flat spot or tire a tire slipping, maybe a little help from a rock. On the road you’re stuck grinding it out.

Another oppo pointed out how its difficult to get the same buzz from other activities, and it is.

After a full day of snowboarding I feel good, tired but good. The next few days I’ll have a few of the good soreies and know I got a good workout but it stops there. Same with mountain biking, sports, hiking, etc... Even sports with a lot of running. There is something different I think about running for a long time without stopping.

The “high” or “glow” as I like to call it I can only get from Sex, Surfing, or Running. I would guess swimming too as that is mostly what I do while surfing. Nothing touches surfing for me, and I’m not even good at it.

Running I hate, but I can get that feeling easily and everyday.

Running has always been effective for me on both weight loss/maintenance and mood stabilization. Unfortunately, I also battle plantar fasciitis. This year it got so bad i had to go to physical therapy and completely stop running. Thankfully i can do it again, but even now I’m not pushing it and sticking with my treadmill. I also bought a spin bike for the days it hurts, which works very well.

I don’t set goals, no disappointments :)

2020 fitness goal is to not slide backwards.   The likely pound of cookies I ate on Christmas Eve has me not even thinking of behaving myself until after today.

I haven’t surfed in a few years. Haven’t had a car I could stick my board in. Now that I moved back to SoCal I need to get back on it. Such a wonderful feeling.

I think I just suck at surfing significantly enough right now that its not very fun. I love body boarding though so Im sure once I get the hang of surfing it will be a regular hobby. Some day I will finally finish unpacking and can just enjoy living in Malibu and surf often.

No excuses;) I’ve taken the 02 to the beach (board on top). Although I don’t think I’d do it again because it brought a lot of attention to a spot that is not well known. Or you know, at least we think it is like every group of surfers.

Well there was no where to strap a board to a GTO, but I can strap one to the Vette, the Audi, or borrow mums Jeep.

I saw this post a while ago and it's been on my head. How achievable is this goal? I run 4 miles on average a few times a week. That math gets me to 600. But bad weather, injury, busy, any blips and you miss. I can certainly run more than 4 to pad the miles, and 500 seems too doable, but I'm not sure about 600. I like the idea of this, though.

So my normal runs are also 3.5 to 4.5 but I spent most of last year working up to being able to run that regularly. I “trained” for a 10 miler the first year so that put me slightly ahead of the ball to get 500. But I still ended up having to run 6.5 on Christmas Eve to make sure I got there.

This year (600) I was waaaaaay ahead doing 70 miles per month. Then I Slacked hard one month and never recovered. I was almost caught up and my knee hurt BAD so I accepted my fate and tacked the 13 miles onto this years goal of 700.

I keep a spreadsheet which I’d be happy to share. But that is the real motivator. The occasional long runs are what will get you there. Nice days in the spring I’ll put away 6-10 outside.

I think I'll see what I log in January and February, and go from there. The last two months of the year are always shit shows for us; my son's birthday is beginning of November, then Thanksgiving, then my daughter's birthday is beginning of December, then Christmas. I started my spreadsheet logging miles, time, pace, and shoes. We'll see!

Oh yea being ahead before the holidays is key. I only count 15 “run” days in November and December. We went out of town for Christmas, I would have made it had I run while we were up there.
